To analyze cancellations of surgeries and identify evidence-based interventions to address this issue. ⋯ Cancellation of scheduled surgeries has a significant impact on patients' health, resources, cost, and quality of care. It is difficult to devise a solution without understanding the cause of cancellations.

Comparative StudyAdministration of Oral Acetaminophen to Reduce Costs for the Hysterectomy Patient at a Community Hospital.
This quality improvement project aimed to change the practice of administration route of acetaminophen from intravenous (IV) to oral to patients having a hysterectomy at a community hospital, reduce costs, and maintain postanesthesia care unit pain scores for patients who receive oral acetaminophen comparable to those who receive IV acetaminophen. ⋯ The administration of oral acetaminophen provided equivalent postoperative analgesia compared with IV acetaminophen and reduced costs for both the hospital and patients.

Utilization of the STOP-Bang Questionnaire as a Standardized Screening Tool for Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Veteran Administration Surgical Patients.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects an estimated 20% of the adult surgical population. Veteran patients have many characteristics consistent with OSA, but lack of standardized screening results in decreased detection of patients at risk for OSA. ⋯ The prevalence of patients among the Veteran population with and at risk for OSA is higher than the general population. Utilization of the STOP-Bang questionnaire as a standardized preoperative screening tool in preanesthesia clinics can increase the identification of patients at risk for OSA.

Elective Surgery Cancellations During the Time Between Scheduling and Operation.
Surgery cancellations cause harm to patients, extra work for preoperative staff, and financial loss for organizations. Day of surgery cancellations are a widely used indicator for operative effectiveness, but there is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of cancellations during earlier stages of a patient's preoperative waiting period. The purpose of this study was to measure the reasons, frequencies, and timing of elective surgery cancellations after scheduling. ⋯ More attention should be focused on patients' suitability and organizational resources in earlier stages of preoperative period.

Preoperative Risk Assessment to Guide Prophylaxis and Reduce the Incidence of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting.
This article describes the implementation of a postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) risk prediction and prophylaxis protocol. ⋯ The results of this project suggest that a risk-tailored approach to PONV prophylaxis using a risk assessment tool along with treatment recommendations is effective at reducing the incidence of PONV. The effectiveness of this approach is limited by the involvement of the anesthesia providers responsible for completing the assessments and administering PONV prophylaxis.
