As nurses, we interact with both victims and perpetrators of violence. Our goal is to save the patient; however, we also play a role in the legal outcome of that violence. What we do in caring for these patients is important. Means of preserving and documenting evidence while caring for the victims of violence are discussed and guidelines for the nurses legal role are given.

Perioperative nurses commonly care for patients with changes in mental status, especially elderly patients. Three common mental status disorders in the elderly are delirium, depression, and dementia. ⋯ Despite similarities, the appropriate nursing interventions may vary significantly. Interventions discussed in this article focus on the etiology of the presenting problem and the nursing interventions that will promote the most positive outcome for the patient.

The Project Team on a Perioperative Model was charged with finding or creating a theoretical model for perioperative nursing. Team members evaluated 15 existing theories and decided to use the conceptual model developed by AORN's Data Elements Coordinating Committee. The Perioperative patient Focused Model is logical, and the concepts and principles are supported in practice environments.

Assessing and managing post-operative pain in older adult patients is complex. A baseline preoperative pain assessment provides the necessary data that assist appropriate and effective pain management. Careful monitoring and individualization of patient dosages result in effective older adult patient pain management.
