Comparative Study Clinical TrialOpen vs. closed reduction combined with minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis in humeral fractures.
Aim To explore a more effective surgical procedure, the outcomes of closed manipulative reduction (CMR) combined with minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and conventional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for treating proximal humeral fractures were compared. Material and methods In a retrospective study of patients operated for humerus shaft fractures from April 2008 to July 2011, the outcomes of 33 patients treated with CMR/MIPO were compared with the outcomes of 42 patients treated with ORIF. The fractures were classified, and the incision length, blood transfusion, operating time, as well as the VAS (Visual Analog Scale) pain scores were analyzed. ⋯ The postoperative radiographs verified good position of all screws and satisfactory bone fracture reduction in both groups. Meanwhile, in the ORIF group, nonunion (three cases) and humeral head necrosis (four cases) were detected. Conclusions The MR/MIPO technique showed smaller incisions, easier operation, less blood transfusion and more effective recovery of shoulder joint function for treating proximal humeral fractures than ORIF.

Treatment of comminuted patellar fracture with the nitinol patellar concentrator.
To evaluate the clinical effect of the nitinol (NiTi)-patellar concentrator (NT-PC) for the treatment of comminuted patellar fractures. ⋯ The application of the NT-PC is a satisfactory approach to the treatment of comminuted patellar fractures.

ReviewNext-generation robotic surgery--from the aspect of surgical robots developed by industry.
At present, much of the research conducted worldwide focuses on extending the ability of surgical robots. One approach is to extend robotic dexterity. For instance, accessibility and dexterity of the surgical instruments remains the largest issue for reduced port surgery such as single port surgery or natural orifice surgery. ⋯ Enhancing the surgeon's perception is an approach that uses advanced sensor technology. The real-time data acquired through the robotic system combined with the data stored in the robot (such as the robot's location) provide a major advantage. This paper aims at introducing state-of-the-art products and pre-market products in this technological advancement, namely the robotic challenge in extending dexterity and hopefully providing the path to robotic surgery in the near future.

Left subclavian artery rerouting and selective perfusion management in frozen elephant trunk surgery.
The frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique enables combined aortic arch and descending aortic repair. We report our experience with a modified arch replacement technique by rerouting of the left subclavian artery (LSA) and fixation of the FET in Zone 2 or proximally under selective perfusion of all three arch arteries and the downstream aorta. ⋯ LSA rerouting facilitates arch aortic repair by FET surgery. The selective perfusion of all arch arteries and the downstream aorta during open arch repair reduces the ischemic times and may improve organ protection.

Wireless vital signs from a life-supporting medical device exposed to electromagnetic disturbance.
To evaluate the level of agreement of simulated wired and Wi-Fi vital signs output from an intra-aortic balloon pump during exposure to electromagnetic interference from frequency overlapping ZigBee sensors. ⋯ Level of agreement in wired and wireless (Wi-Fi) arterial blood pressure and electrocardiogram during single or multiple sensor interference was high. No clinically relevant degradation of Wi-Fi transmission of aortic blood pressure or ECG signals was observed.
