Do diabetes group visits lead to lower medical care charges?
To evaluate whether attending diabetes group visits (GVs) leads to lower medical care charges for inadequately insured patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ After controlling for endogeneity via estimation of a treatment effect model, GVs statistically significantly reduced outpatient visit charges. Estimation of a separate treatment effect model of specialty care visits indicated that GVs likely substitute for more expensive specialty care visits.

Reducing the number of emergency department visits and costs associated with anxiety: a randomized controlled study.
To demonstrate the economic effects of an intervention for members discharged from the emergency department (ED) with anxiety diagnoses. ⋯ The case management-based intervention effectively reduced psychiatric ED recidivism and costs for members discharged from the ED with an anxiety diagnosis, without significantly affecting psychiatric outpatient visit costs.

Evaluation of laboratory monitoring alerts within a computerized physician order entry system for medication orders.
Errors involving medication use are common. Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) can improve prescribing practices. Few studies have examined the effect of CPOE in combination with decision support tools on prescribing practices in the outpatient setting. Less is known about prescribers' adherence to laboratory monitoring recommendations. ⋯ As CPOE becomes more prevalent, additional research is needed to determine effective decision support tools. These findings then should be communicated to the developers and users of computerized medical record systems.

Economic evaluation of controlled-release oxycodone vs oxycodone-acetaminophen for osteoarthritis pain of the hip or knee.
To examine, in routine practice, the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of oxycodone (OxyContin) compared with standard therapy for osteoarthritis pain. ⋯ From the societal perspective, oxycodone was more effective and less costly than oxycodone-acetaminophen. From the healthcare perspective, oxycodone (compared with generic oxycodone-acetaminophen) fell within the acceptable range of cost-effectiveness between 50,000 US dollars and 100,000 US dollars per QALY gained.

Matching patients and practitioners based on beliefs about care: results of a randomized controlled trial.
To determine whether an intervention designed to inform and guide patients in choosing a primary care provider (PCP) could increase satisfaction and trust. ⋯ The discrepancy between patient and practitioner beliefs about care is an important determinant of trust and satisfaction, and involving patients in the selection of their PCP can have an independent positive effect. It should be possible to build on the experience of this project to develop programs that better match patients and practitioners within managed care plans.
