Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon ulcerative condition associated with inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and hematologic disease. We report a patient with essential thrombocythemia and pyoderma gangrenosum. ⋯ There may be a possible association between pyoderma gangrenosum and essential thrombocythemia. The diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum should be considered in patients with essential thrombocythemia and cutaneous ulcers.

Sporotrichosis infection on mines of the Witwatersrand.
Our knowledge of skin disease is often based on fortuitous situations that have provided opportunities for observation and study of the disease. One of these diseases is sporotrichosis. ⋯ The investigation of this outbreak has contributed significantly to our present day knowledge of sporotrichosis, the causative organism, its mode of spread, and its clinical features. It is also a striking example of meticulous scientific research and observation.

An acral lentiginous melanoma in situ on the sole is often difficult to differentiate with the naked eye from an acquired plantar melanocytic nevus. Recent technical advances in epiluminescence microscopy have contributed to the differentiation of these two pigmented skin lesions. ⋯ A distinctive dermatoscopic feature of acral lentiginous melanoma in situ is diffuse and irregular pigmentation over the entire surface of the lesion. This feature is helpful for differentiating acral lentiginous melanoma in situ from acquired plantar melanocytic nevi.
