Comparative StudyUse of ultrasonography as a noninvasive decisive tool to determine the accurate endotracheal tube size in anesthetized children.
It is hard to determine the appropriate size and correct tracheal position of endotracheal tube (ETT) in children. The aim of this study is to determine tracheal diameter in children by using ultrasonography technique as objective tool and compare it with commonly used aged based formulas for the ETT size estimation. ⋯ Ultrasonographical determination of transverse tracheal diameter is a suitable method for determining the correct endotracheal tube size when compared with the age based formulas.

Ultrasound-guided vascular cannulation. Experience in critically-ill pediatric patients.
Central vascular cannulation in children is a highly complex technique and poses many difficulties. Vascular ultrasound can make this procedure easier. ⋯ In the pediatric patients studied, ultrasound-guided vascular cannulation allowed vessel visualization and measurement of their depth and diameter; the success rate was high and it was associated to a low complication rate.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialImpact of a program aimed at reducing catheter-related infections implemented in nine pediatric intensive care units in Argentina.
Catheter-related infections (CRIs) cause a high level of morbidity and mortality with the increasing use of hospital resources. ⋯ The program achieved a significant reduction in CRI rates. Based on the program, CRI surveillance was implemented in all participating pediatric intensive care units. Training and continuous surveillance are necessary to maintain and improve the outcomes accomplished with the program.

Observational StudyAssessment of orofacial pain management in a pediatric emergency department and at home after discharge.
An inadequate pain management is common in the emergency department. Our objective was to analyze pain management among children with an orofacial infection or trauma in the emergency department and to assess compliance and satisfaction with analgesia prescribed at discharge. ⋯ Pain assessment and management was scarce in the emergency department. The most common prescription was as needed, contrary to what is recommended in the guidelines. Analgesic control worked better for trauma injuries than for infections.

Case Reports[Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy: alarming lesions of a benign condition. Case report].
We report a case of acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy in an 18-month-old boy after an episode of otitis media. The clinical presentation begins with skin erythematous macules on the thighs, followed by purpuric lesions in arms, legs, and ankle edema. It was initially interpreted as urticaria, whereby steroids were indicated. ⋯ Differential diagnosis includes erythema multiforme, hemorrhagic urticaria, drug- induced vasculitis, Kawasaki disease, infected eczema, sepsis (either meningococcal or non-meningococcal) and child abuse. Some of them have risk of mortality. Management is conservative, however, steroids may be a therapeutic option.
