ReviewCaring for Patients with Rectal Cancer During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The extraordinary spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has dramatically and rapidly changed the way in which we provide medical care for patients with all diagnoses. Conservation of resources, social distancing, and the risk of poor outcomes in COVID-19-positive cancer patients have forced practitioners and surgeons to completely rethink routine care. ⋯ It is therefore imperative to rethink how rectal cancer treatment can be aligned with the current COVID-19 pandemic paradigms. In this review, we discuss evidence-based recommendations to optimize oncological outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Randomized Controlled TrialIntravenous Dexmedetomidine Combined with Ultrasound-Guided Rectus Sheath Block for Open Gastrectomy: a Prospective Randomized Trial.
To compare the incidences of positive hemodynamic response (HR > 100 beats min-1 or SBP > 160 mmHg) during abdominal exploration and moderate pain after surgery, when using dexmedetomidine infusion and rectus sheath block. ⋯ Dexmedetomidine infusion combined with rectus sheath block provided more hemodynamic stability during abdominal exploration and better analgesia after surgery.

Meta AnalysisA Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Physical Exercise Prehabilitation in Major Abdominal Surgery (PROSPERO 2017 CRD42017080366).
Physical exercise prehabilitation has been proposed to improve postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effect of preoperative exercise training compared with standard care on postoperative outcomes in major abdominal surgery. ⋯ PROSPERO 2017 CRD42017080366.

Predictive Value of Intraoperative Indocyanine Green Clearance Measurement on Postoperative Liver Function After Anatomic Major Liver Resection.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of measuring indocyanine green (ICG) clearance during intraoperative partial occlusion of liver lobes to be resected on postoperative liver function following major anatomic liver resection. ⋯ Intraoperative ICG clearance measurements during partial occlusion of blood flow accurately predict postoperative liver function and could be new criteria for determining the feasibility and safety of anatomic major liver resection.

Review Meta AnalysisEfficacy of Pasireotide for Prevention of Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula in Pancreatic Surgery: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Pasireotide was recently suggested for the prevention of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after pancreatic surgery. However, its efficacy remains to be controversially dicussed. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of pasireotide for preventing POPF after pancreatic surgery. ⋯ Based on the available evidence, use of pasireotide may not reduce clinically relevant POPF as well as it may not improve postoperative course substantially after pancreatic surgery. Further investigator-initiated high-quality trials are needed.
