Comparative StudyA pilot study comparing the antispasmodic effects of inhaled salmeterol, salbutamol and ipratropium bromide using different aerosol devices on muscarinic bronchoconstriction in healthy cats.
This study compared the duration and magnitude of the antispasmodic effects of salmeterol (SLM), salbutamol (SAL), ipratropium bromide (IB) and the combination of SAL and IB (SAL/IB) against carbachol-induced bronchoconstriction in healthy cats, and investigated the gain in efficacy using a two or fourfold increase in drug dosages. The drug regimens used were: (1) SLM 25 microg, SAL 100 microg, IB 20 microg and SAL/IB 100 microg/20 microg for bronchodilators delivered by a metered-dose inhaler (MDI); (2) SAL 3.75 mg and IB 62.5 microg for nebulised (NEB) medications. To monitor the bronchodilator effect, airway responsiveness was assessed at different time points using barometric whole-body plethysmography and calculation of the concentration of inhaled carbachol inducing a 300% increase of baseline Penh (enhanced pause), an estimator of airflow limitation. ⋯ A fourfold increase of the initial dose of IB MDI and NEB IB significantly increased C-Penh300. Despite a fourfold dose increase, SLM displayed the weakest degree of bronchoprotection compared to other bronchodilators. The study provides evidence that inhaled bronchodilators are efficient at preventing muscarinic-induced bronchospasm in healthy cats and that SAL and IB appear to be short-acting bronchodilators in contrast to SLM.

Visual and quantitative electroencephalographic analysis of healthy young and adult cats under medetomidine sedation.
A study was designed to investigate the effect of medetomidine sedation on quantitative electroencephalography (q-EEG) in healthy young and adult cats to determine objective guidelines for diagnostic EEG recordings and interpretation. Preliminary visual examination of EEG recordings revealed high-voltage low-frequency background activity. Spindles, k-complexes and vertex sharp transients characteristic of sleep or sedation were superimposed on a low background activity. ⋯ The mean and median frequency values in group B was significantly higher for delta, theta and beta bands and lower for the alpha band. The study has shown that a medetomidine sedation protocol for feline EEG may offer a method for investigating bio-electrical cortical activity. The use of q-EEG analysis showed a decrease in high frequency bands and increased activity of the low frequency band in healthy cats under medetomidine sedation.

Pressure profile in the caudal extradural space of standing horses before and after extradural drug administration.
The objectives of this study were to measure the pressure in the caudal extradural space of standing horses and to evaluate the usefulness of pressure waves to identify correct needle placement. Caudal extradural pressure was measured in 12 healthy horses. The pressure and any extradural pressure waves were recorded for 3min after puncture, for 1min after testing for lack of resistance (LOR), and for 10min after lidocaine injection. ⋯ Extradural pressure waves were not always present. Extradural space pressure was sub-atmospheric in most horses and extradural injection significantly increased this pressure for up to 10min. Extradural pressure waves had limited usefulness in the confirmation of the correct placement of the needle.

Tissue factor activated thromboelastography correlates to clinical signs of bleeding in dogs.
The ability of a laboratory assay to correlate to clinical phenotype is crucial for the accurate diagnosis and monitoring of haemostasis and is therefore challenging with currently used routine haemostasis assays. Thromboelastography (TEG) is increasingly used to evaluate haemostasis in humans and may well be of value in the workup of dogs suspected of having a haemostatic disorder. This study was undertaken to evaluate prospectively how tissue factor (TF) activated TEG correlated to clinical signs of bleeding in dogs, compared to a routine coagulation profile. ⋯ In comparison, the coagulation profile had a PPV between 50-81% and a NPV between 92-93% for detection of bleeding, depending on the observer. In conclusion, a TF-activated TEG G value<3.2K dyn/cm(2) correctly identified dogs with clinical signs of bleeding with very high PPV and NPV, irrespective of observer. The findings strongly suggest that TF- activated TEG may be of value in the workup of dogs suspected of having a haemostatic disorder.

ReviewVeterinary vaccine development from an industrial perspective.
Veterinary vaccines currently available in Europe and in other parts of the world are developed by the veterinary pharmaceutical industry. The development of a vaccine for veterinary use is an economic endeavour that takes many years. There are many obstacles along the path to the successful development and launch of a vaccine. ⋯ Vaccines have to be produced in a quality controlled environment to guarantee delivery of a product of consistent quality with well defined animal and consumer safety and efficacy characteristics. The regulatory and manufacturing legislative framework in which the development takes place is described, as well as the trend in developments in production systems. Recent developments in bacterial, viral and parasite vaccine research and development are also addressed and the development of novel adjuvants that use the expanding knowledge of immunology and disease pathology are described.
