Role of laparoscopy in the management of visceral injuries following abdominal stab wounds.
Laparoscopy offers several advantages in the treatment of abdominal stab wounds. In this paper, we report our experience during 2004, where hemodynamically stable patients with stab wounds were managed laparoscopically. ⋯ Laparoscopy should be included in management algorithms in patients with anterior abdominal stab wounds who are hemodynamically stable. In addition to its diagnostic ability, this study demonstrates that laparoscopy can be an effective management modality with minimal morbidity and no mortality.

Case ReportsLaparoscopic resection of schwannoma in the anomaly of obturator nerve.
Most retroperitoneal schwannomas are benign tumors originating from schwann cells and are relatively rare, especially schwannomas arising in the obturator nerve. In this paper, we describe a 44-year-old woman with a retroperitoneal schwannoma in the anomaly of the obturator nerve, which was treated by laparoscopy without any complications.

Comparative StudyImproved outcomes for laparoscopic appendectomy compared with open appendectomy in the pediatric population.
The appendectomy is a common emergent surgical procedure in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to examine our institution's experience and outcomes in the appendectomy in the pediatric population early in our transition from open surgery to a predominantly laparoscopic approach. ⋯ The laparoscopic appendectomy procedure is a safe alternative to open appendectomy in pediatric patients and results in shorter hospital stays with less postoperative pain.

Intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus presenting as acute abdomen in children: value of diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy.
Intestinal malrotation is a developmental anomaly of intestinal fixation and rotation caused by a disruption in the normal embryologic development of the bowel. Normal rotation takes place around the superior mesenteric artery. Incomplete rotation and midgut volvulus is the commonest type of anomaly. Intestinal obstruction is the commonest presentation in symptomatic cases. ⋯ Our study shows the diagnostic value of laparoscopy in acute abdomen in children. The other advantages include less postoperative pain, a better cosmesis, especially in children, early return of bowel movement, and early discharge.

Case ReportsSuccessful repair of a diaphragmatic hernia through a pericardial window with acellular dermal matrix.
A successful placement of a transabdominal pericardial window is associated with diaphragmatic hernia. In this paper, we present the case of a 5-month-old ex-31-weeks-premature baby who developed a symptomatic diaphragmatic hernia following a chronic pericardial effusion who was treated successfully with a laparoscopic transabdominal pericardial window. Laparoscopy and a pericardial window were used to manage the symptomatic effusion that developed following a bilateral thoracotomy and median sternotomy for the patient's massive hygroma. ⋯ Recovery and subsequent followup at 1 year revealed no hernia, full symptom resolution, and no recurrence of the pericardial effusion. A pericardial window is an effective approach for the management of chronic pericardial effusion. Diaphragmatic herniation through a pericardial window can be successfully repaired with an acellular dermal matrix.
