Objectives To analyze clinical characteristics, treatment, outcomes of critically ill patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) admitted to the medical intensive care unit (ICU) and to identify predictors of adverse outcome. Methods We analyzed prospectively 170 patients. Data included: demographic characteristics, hematologic diagnosis, reasons for ICU admission, transplant status, the presence of neutropenia, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation-II and sequential organ failure assessment scores, and level of organ support. ⋯ Conclusion The ICU mortality of critically ill patients with HM is high, particularly in the group of MV. Need for vasopressors at admission and MV were independent predictors of ICU mortality. Majority of patients required invasive MV due to severe respiratory failure and non-invasive MV was sufficient only in small number of cases with favorable outcome.

Evaluate adherence to clotting factor treatment and associated outcomes for patients with hemophilia using an integrated delivery database. ⋯ Among patients with severe disease, the majority (66.2%) were adherent <70% of the time.

Myeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with a matched sibling donor (MSD) in first complete remission (CR1) is an effective consolidation for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and matched unrelated donor (MUD) is an alternative stem cell source. ⋯ Myeloablative MUD allo-HSCT resulted in comparable survivals with MRD transplant. RIC allo-HSCT produced promising long-term DFS with a low TRM in adult ALL.

It is widely believed that sleep apnoea syndrome leads to polycythaemia, but the evidence is largely anecdotal. We believe that polycythaemia is not commonly seen in patients with sleep apnoea syndrome. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between polycythaemia and sleep apnoea syndrome. ⋯ We think that OSA is very rarely the reason for secondary polycythaemia.
