Professor John F. Nunn: scientist, anaesthetist and polymath.
John Francis Nunn (1925-2022) was an anaesthetist and clinical scientist who used his incomprehension of the science of anaesthesia in his early career to guide an extensive lifetime of innovative research. His interests outside of medicine led to him developing renowned expertise in such diverse areas as Egyptian hieroglyphs and the origins of the Earth's atmosphere. He was an outstanding communicator, writing four books alongside an impressive number of papers covering diverse topics from cell biology to history. His greatest contribution is in the understanding of respiratory physiology during anaesthesia which continues to underpin current routine anaesthetic practice and patient safety.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Postoperative recovery with continuous erector spinae plane block or video-assisted paravertebral block after minimally invasive thoracic surgery: a prospective, randomised controlled trial.
PROcedure SPECific Postoperative Pain ManagemenT (PROSPECT) guidelines recommend erector spinae plane (ESP) block or paravertebral block (PVB) for postoperative analgesia after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). However, there are few trials comparing the effectiveness of these techniques on patient-centric outcomes, and none evaluating chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP). Furthermore, there are no available trials comparing ultrasound-guided ESP with surgically placed PVB in this patient cohort. ⋯ NCT04729712.

Needle-free pharmacological sedation techniques in paediatric patients for imaging procedures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Sedation techniques and drugs are increasingly used in children undergoing imaging procedures. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we present an overview of literature concerning sedation of children aged 0-8 yr for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures using needle-free pharmacological techniques. ⋯ We found a large variation in medication, dosage, and route of administration for needle-free sedation. Success rates for sedation techniques varied between 36% and 98%.

Celebrating the first centenary of the British Journal of Anaesthesia: a century of discovery and dissemination.
In 2023, the British Journal of Anaesthesia commemorates its first century of publishing innovations in anaesthesia, pain, critical care and perioperative medicine. In honour of this special anniversary we outline a number of exciting initiatives to occur over the course of the year to commemorate this important milestone, and to highlight the many contributions that the British Journal of Anaesthesia has made to patient care, medical research, and medical education in our first 100 years.

Despite frequent use of neuromuscular blocking agents in critical illness, changes in neuromuscular transmission with critical illness are not well appreciated. Recent studies have provided greater insights into the molecular mechanisms for beneficial muscular effects and non-muscular anti-inflammatory properties of neuromuscular blocking agents. ⋯ We also address the important favourable and adverse consequences and molecular bases for these consequences during neuromuscular blocking agent use in critical illness. This review, therefore, provides an enhanced understanding of clinical therapeutic effects and novel pathways for the salutary and aberrant effects of neuromuscular blocking agents when used during acquired pathologic states of critical illness.
