Miscommunication is a leading cause of preventable incidents in healthcare. A number of checklists have been created in an attempt to improve patient outcomes with only a small impact. However, the 2009 WHO Surgical Safety Checklist demonstrated benefits in terms of reduced morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to determine whether use of a Postanaesthesia Team Handover (PATH) checklist would reduce hypoxaemic events in the postanaesthesia care unit (PACU). ⋯ NCT03972423.

Meta Analysis
Convalescent plasma for COVID-19: a meta-analysis, trial sequential analysis, and meta-regression.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific antibodies, particularly those preventing interaction between the viral spike receptor-binding domain and the host angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor, may prevent viral entry into host cells and disease progression. ⋯ CRD42021234201 (PROSPERO).

Multicenter Study Observational Study
DALES, Drug Allergy Labels in Elective Surgical patients: a prospective multicentre cross-sectional study of incidence, risks, and attitudes in penicillin de-labelling strategies.
We sought to define the prevalence and nature of patient-reported drug allergies, determine their impact on prescribing, and explore drug allergy knowledge and attitudes amongst anaesthetists. ⋯ Almost 30% of UK elective surgical patients report a history of drug allergies, but the majority of reported reactions are likely to be non-allergic reactions. Allergy labels can impact on perioperative prescribing through avoidance of important drugs and use of less effective alternatives. We highlight important knowledge gaps about drug allergy amongst anaesthetists, and the need for improved education around allergy.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Ultrasound guidance for urgent arterial and venous catheterisation: randomised controlled study.
Haemodynamically unstable patients often require arterial and venous catheter insertion urgently. We hypothesised that ultrasound-guided arterial and venous catheterisation would reduce mechanical complications. ⋯ NCT02820909.

Cardiac assessment in noncardiac surgery clinical practice guidelines should be supported by the highest-quality evidence such as that offered by systematic reviews. Currently, the methodological and reporting quality of these studies remains unknown. ⋯ We found deficiencies in several key areas regarding the methodological and reporting qualities of systematic reviews included in cardiac assessment in noncardiac surgery clinical practice guidelines. As these clinical practice guidelines are instrumental to clinical decision-making and patient care in cardiac assessment in noncardiac surgery, we advocate for improved reporting quality among systematic reviews cited as supportive evidence for these recommendations.
