Snoring is a common symptom among the adult population, and it is the most common complaint in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome. Patients who snore in a sitting position while taking a nap or sleeping may have a narrower upper airway. The aim of this study was to evaluate if snoring in a sitting position is a predictor of OSA in patients. ⋯ In the present study, the symptoms of self-reported snoring in a sitting position and greater neck circumference can be useful clinical predictors of OSA in Chinese patients.

This study aims to determine whether there is an increased prevalence of obstructive lung diseases (OLDs) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We also determined whether among the OLD patients there is a difference in the prevalences of specific chronic disease co-morbidities between patients with and without OSA. ⋯ OSA was associated with an increased prevalence of OLDs.

Arterial stiffness and its hemodynamic consequences are known to be associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) are noninvasive indicators of the arterial stiffness and wave reflection. Sleep deprivation (SD) is known to be associated with increased incidence of adverse cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between acute SD and arterial stiffness parameters in healthy adults, which has not been studied previously. ⋯ In the present study, we demonstrated that even one night of SD is associated with increased arterial stiffness in healthy adults. The present findings suggest that adverse effects of SD on cardiovascular system might be at least in part due to increased arterial stiffness which needs to be tested with large-scale studies and in the chronic SD setting.

This study investigated gender differences in the effect of comorbid insomnia symptom on depression, anxiety, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. There are gender differences in the presentation of obstructive sleep apnea. However, the influence of gender on the presentation of comorbid insomnia symptom and obstructive sleep apnea is not known. ⋯ Men are more prone to the negative impact of comorbid insomnia symptom and obstructive sleep apnea on their level of fatigue and quality of life than women.
