Meta AnalysisLiterature Review and Meta-Analysis of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Treating Chronic Back Pain.
This study is a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to a control and to other nerve stimulation therapies (NSTs) for the treatment of chronic back pain. ⋯ These results suggest that TENS does not improve symptoms of lower back pain, but may offer short-term improvement of functional disability.

Randomized Controlled TrialDexamethasone as an Adjuvant to Femoral Nerve Block in Children and Adolescents Undergoing Knee Arthroscopy: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.
Perineural dexamethasone has been demonstrated to extend postsurgical analgesia after peripheral nerve blockade in adults. The mechanism of action of dexamethasone as a regional anesthetic adjuvant is unclear as intravenous dexamethasone has been shown to have similar analgesic efficacy as perineural dexamethasone. The efficacy of perineural dexamethasone has not been previously explored in the pediatric population. ⋯ This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01971645.

Effects of Intraneural Injection of Dexmedetomidine in Combination With Ropivacaine in Rat Sciatic Nerve Block.
Dexmedetomidine is known to have neural protection effect via attenuation of inflammatory responses induced by local anesthetics. We investigated whether intraneural dexmedetomidine is effective for attenuating or preventing neural injury resulting from inadvertent intraneural injection of local anesthetic. ⋯ Intraneural dexmedetomidine has sensory and motor blockade-enhancing effects, anti-inflammatory properties, and protective effects against neural injury. These findings suggest that dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant has beneficial effects in rat when intraneural injection of local anesthetic occurs.
