Nursing workload in intensive care units and the influence of patient and nurse characteristics.
Understanding factors that can potentially influence patient care and nursing workload in intensive care units is important. Previous studies have shown contradictory outcomes about the relationships between nursing workload and patient and nurse characteristics. ⋯ The findings can be used to ensure appropriate staffing of intensive care units by nurses. However, nurse and patient characteristics should not be considered the only factors that influence nursing workload in intensive care units.

Implementation of ABCDEF care bundle in intensive care units: A cross-sectional survey.
Delirium affects up to 80% of patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and is associated with higher mortality, physical dependence, and health care costs. The 2018 pain, agitation, delirium, immobility, and sleep guideline recommended ABCDEF care bundle for delirium prevention and management. However, limited information is available regarding the adoption of the care bundle in ICUs in Mainland China. ⋯ Promoting the uses of a reliable delirium assessment tool such as Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Unit patients, building an early mobilization team, and engaging family caregivers in the care plan may contribute to improved patients' clinical outcomes.

Validation of E-PRE-DELIRIC in cardiac surgical ICU delirium: A retrospective cohort study.
The early prediction model for delirium in intensive care units (ICUs)-E-PRE-DELIRIC-has been created to predict delirium development during the length of stay in ICUs. However, there have been few early predictive models for delirium in the cardiac surgical ICU (CSICU), and the predictive ability of the E-PRE-DELIRIC among patients following cardiac surgeries is still unknown. ⋯ Early prediction of delirium risk at CSICU admission is of vital importance and could provide timely information to caregivers. However, the E-PRE-DELIRIC model should be applied cautiously in the CSICU because of the significant probability of over-estimating the risk of developing delirium.

The literature emphasizes the importance of the intensive care unit (ICU) diary to fill the gaps and recover the delusional memories of patients admitted to ICU in order to build the history of their illness. The ICU diary is a measure originally intended to support the severely ill patient, but it would also seem to be useful for family members and carers. According to our analysis of the literature, this study is the first description of the contents of ICU diaries in the Italian context. ⋯ The diaries could be adapted to the Italian context and this could make the diary a common practice in Italy as well.

Mobilization in the evening to prevent delirium: A pilot randomized trial.
Delirium is a common complication in patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Interventions such as mobilization are effective in the prevention and treatment of delirium, although this is usually completed during the daytime. ⋯ In a mixed ICU population, mobilization in the evening was feasible in one-quarter of patients with a low rate of safety events. Future trials seem to be feasible and worth conducting.
