Case ReportsA dentigerous cyst containing an ectopic canine tooth below the floor of the maxillary sinus: a case report.
Ectopic eruption into the dental environment is common, whereas eruption into other sites is rare. Diverse anatomical locations such as the mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, maxillary sinuses and nasal cavity can infrequently be the site of ectopic tooth eruption. One of the nondental sites for ectopic eruption is the maxillary sinus. Here, we present a case of dentigerous cyst with an ectopic maxillary canine tooth located below the floor of the right maxillary sinus in a 37-year-old man.

Case ReportsSurgical treatment for sleep apnea: changes in craniofacial and pharyngeal airway morphology in a child with achondroplasia.
Here, we report the case of a male child with achondroplasia who was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and underwent adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. By analyzing lateral cephalograms, we evaluated the craniofacial and pharyngeal airway morphology immediately before surgery (age, 5 years 6 months) and 1 year 2 months after surgery (age, 6 years 8 months). Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy dilated the pharynx and improved the craniofacial and pharyngeal morphologies, apparently thus improving the sleep apnea.

A prolonged period of oral surgery is a potential risk factor of postoperative mental disorders although no such report has been published to date. We retrospectively studied perioperative features in 36 patients who underwent prolonged (10 hours or more) of oral surgery. Patients were categorized as pre-delirium (Pre-D) when they manifested 1 or 2 symptoms and delirium (D) when they showed more than 2 symptoms, according to the modified International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition. ⋯ Propofol-based general anesthesia was most commonly employed. The time prior to appearance of pre-delirium was significantly shorter in D (30.0 +/- 16.7 hours) than in Pre-D (55.0 +/- 35.0 hours) group patients. Our results indicate that, in general, patients predisposed to postoperative mental disorders have moderate complications preoperatively, are generally older than 50-years-old, receive propofol-based general anesthesia and/or experience a massive hemorrhage during the operation.

Co-aggregation as a virulent factor of Streptococcus sanguis isolated from infective endocarditis.
The pathogenicity of strains of the Streptococcus sanguis group, isolated from infective endcarditis, was studied by measuring the development of subcutaneous abscesses in mice after infection with S. sanguis and Actinomyces viscosus either singly or as co-aggregated pairs. The pathogenicity of the co-aggregates was also examined in various viable combinations of the two bacterial species. More abscesses were formed by A. viscosus than the S. sanguis group including clinical isolates. ⋯ Co-aggregated cells were more resistant to phagocytosis and killing by neutrophils in vivo. These results indicated that S. sanguis group streptococci isolated from infective endocarditis are able to co-aggregate and resist phagocytosis. The ability of co-aggregation of S. sanguis may serve as a survival mechanism in a host defense system and may be linked with virulence of this bacteria.
