Although chronic migraine is associated with substantial disability and costs, few treatments have been shown to be effective. OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox, Allergan Inc., Irvine, CA) is the first treatment to be licensed in the UK for the prophylaxis of headaches in adults with chronic migraine. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of onabotulinumtoxinA in this indication in the UK. ⋯ OnabotulinumtoxinA has been shown to reduce the frequency of headaches in patients with chronic migraine and can be considered a cost-effective use of resources in the UK National Health Service. The uncertainties in the model relate to the extrapolation of clinical data beyond the 56-week trial.

Describe resource utilization and costs for total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR) for the 90 days before hospitalization for surgery, the hospital event, and the 90 and 360 days after hospitalization for surgery with emphasis on 90 days after hospitalization. ⋯ While this study used large samples of subjects, generalisability of the results may be limited since the samples were not randomized samples of THR and TKR patients. It is noteworthy that patients in the hospital sample are not the same as those in the insurer sample. Selection of hip-related and knee-related procedures and associated costs was based on qualitative review. Payers may use different billing codes or aggregate costs differently.

Health resource utilization (HRU) and outcomes associated with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) are not well described. Therefore, a population-based cohort study was conducted to characterize patients hospitalized with AECOPD with regard to HRU, mortality, recurrence, and predictors of readmission with AECOPD. ⋯ These findings indicate that AECOPD hospitalizations are associated with substantial mortality and risk of recurrence.

Healthcare resource utilization and economic impact of a ≥2 g/dL decrease in hemoglobin in osteoarthritis patients.
In non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) users, chronic occult blood loss may lead to decreases in hemoglobin, which may lead to increased healthcare expenditures. This study, therefore, sought to quantify healthcare resource utilization of ≥2 g/dL hemoglobin decrease in osteoarthritis patients. ⋯ In patients exposed to NSAIDs, those with significant hemoglobin drops experienced higher subsequent healthcare utilization and charges than controls who did not have a significant hemoglobin drop.

Real-world treatment pattern and outcomes among patients who took tapentadol IR or oxycodone IR.
To evaluate differences in patient characteristics, healthcare resource utilization, and healthcare costs among patients receiving immediate release (IR) formulations of tapentadol (TAP IR) or oxycodone (OXY IR). ⋯ The characteristics of patients who took TAP IR were different from patients who took OXY IR in many respects. In the sub-set of patients matched on demographic and clinical characteristics, those who took TAP IR used healthcare resources to a lesser extent, which was reflected in their lower healthcare charges, relative to OXY IR users.
