In Germany almost every third adult suffers from varicose veins requiring treatment. Conventional varicose vein surgery by high ligation and stripping is widely accepted as standard therapy for saphenous vein insufficiency, although associated with a high frequency of recurrent varicosities. ⋯ Evidence-based prospective trials with large numbers of participants comparing the interventional procedures with high ligation and stripping are still missing. This report delineates current developments in varicose vein surgery and provides information on principles, effectiveness and side effect profiles of endovascular therapy procedures.

To understand the development of bacterial resistance and multi-resistance following treatment with topical and systemic antibiotics is important for dermatologists. Furthermore the sensitization potential and toxicity of antibiotics applied to large skin areas must be considered. ⋯ Continuous monitoring of the resistance profile of important bacteria is also desirable, in order to preserve the utility of important "reserve antibiotics". In this review the most important topical antibiotics used in Germany are evaluated with regards to efficacy and safety profile.

[Anaphylactoid reaction in occult systemic mastocytosis. A rare dermatologic emergency ].
With the occurrence of unclear consciousness conditions primarily internal or neurological causes are considered. Of a systemic mastocytosis one thinks only rarely, which can accompany without or with slight clinically visible skin changes. ⋯ Only an increased tryptase level referred to being present an occult systemic mastocytosis. The diagnostics, potential triggers and therapy of this disease are to be discussed on the basis the available case.

Six questions regarding varicella-zoster virus-related skin diseases are addressed. The Cochran Library, MEDLINE, Clinical Evidence and several guideline providers were searched for evidence. The level of evidence in papers was appraised according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine Levels of Evidence. The current evidence for antiviral therapy of chickenpox in immunocompetent children, adults and pregnancy, recommendation of varicella vaccination, effect of time of initiation of antiviral therapy in acute zoster as well as route of treatment with regard to onset of post-zoster neuralgia are covered.
