This meta-analysis was conducted to compare transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus radiofrequency ablation (RFA) with TACE alone for hepatocellular carcinoma. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL for all relative randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and retrospective studies until October 31 2016. Tumor response, recurrence-free survival, overall survival and postoperative complications were the major evaluation indices. ⋯ Compared with TACE alone group, TACE plus RFA group attained higher tumor response rates (OR = 6.08, 95% CI = 4.00 to 9.26, P < 0.00001), achieved longer recurrence-free survival rates (ORRFS = 3.78, 95% CI: 2.38 to 6.02, P < 0.00001) and overall survival rates (OR1-year = 3.92, 95% CI = 2.41-6.39, P < 0.00001; OR3-year = 2.56; 95% CI = 1.81-3.60; P < 0.00001; OR5-year = 2.78; 95% CI = 1.77-4.38; P < 0.0001). Serious postoperative complications were not observed, although complications were higher in TACE plus RFA group than that in TACE alone group (OR = 2.74, 95% CI = 1.07 to 7.07, P = 0.04). In conclusion, the use of TACE plus RFA for intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma can attain higher tumor response rates and improve survival rates than TACE alone.

Association between XRCC1 polymorphisms and the risk of cervical cancer: a meta-analysis based on 4895 subjects.
The present meta-analysis was intended to explore the relationship between the X-ray repair cross complementing 1 (XRCC1) polymorphisms (Arg194Trp, Arg280His and Arg399Gln) and cervical cancer risk. Several electronic databases were searched systematically and bibliographies of relevant papers were identified carefully. Then, a meta-analysis was performed based on eligible studies in various genetic models. ⋯ The Begg's test and Egger's test were used to find no publication bias. To conclude, the current meta-analysis indicated that the XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism decreased the risk of cervical cancer, while the Arg194Trp and Arg280His polymorphisms were not associated with cervical caner risk. Certainly, a well-designed large-scale multicenter study is warranted to confirm the finding.

This study aimed to examine the association of clinical prognostic factors with epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) efficacy in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrate that EGFR-TKI therapy results in survival benefits for EGFR-mutant advanced NSCLC patients, regardless of gender, smoking history, pathologic type, type of EGFR mutations, brain metastasis and timing of targeted therapy. ECOG score is an independent prognostic factor for PFS, and ECOG score and brain metastasis are independent prognostic factors for OS in advanced NSCLC patients.

Overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor can be found in more than 80% of patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma and is associated with shorter survival. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of adding nimotuzumab to chemoradiation in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Twenty-three patients with clinically staged T3-4 or any node-positive disease were enrolled. ⋯ With a median follow-up of 24.1 months, the 2-year progression-free survival and overall survival were 83.5% and 95.0%, respectively. In conclusion, concurrent administration of chemoradiation and nimotuzumab was well-tolerated with good compliance. Preliminary clinical outcome data appear encouraging with favorable normal tissue toxicity results comparing with historical data of concurrent chemoradiation plus cetuximab.

Human JC and BK polyomaviruses (JCV/BKV) can establish a latent infection without any clinical symptoms in healthy individuals. In immunocompromised hosts infection or reactivation of JCV and BKV can cause lethal progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and hemorrhagic cystitis, respectively. Vaccination with JCV/BKV derived antigen epitope peptides or adoptive transfer of virus-specific T cells would constitute an elegant approach to clear virus-infected cells. ⋯ Cytokine release profile of the epitope-specific T cells was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays and by flow cytometry. We demonstrated that T cell responses were of polyfunctional nature with the potential of epitope-specific killing and cross-reactivity between JCV and BKV. These novel epitopes might constitute a new potential tool to design effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches against both polyomaviruses.
