Spa reaction is an adaptive response of an organism, emerging as a result of external factors. It is a positive element of spa therapy leading to metabolic changes, which are important for the body. The effect of these changes is an increase in immune activity and regenerative reactions of the body. The mechanism of the response is not fully known. ⋯ A beneficial effect of radon treatments on the growth of TAS in the body of the patients treated in the spa was demonstrated. The increase in the TAS concentration on the 5th day of treatment may indicate the relationship between these changes and the phenomenon of spa response. The changes are a result of low doses of ionizing radiation originating from radon dissolved in medicinal water, used in the course of the therapy.

The growing popularity of cycling not only enhances self-efficacy, physical well-being and improves quality of life, but it also leads to the increasing number of bike-related injuries. ⋯ Young men constitute the main group of cyclists in Poland. The risk factors for bike-related accidents in our study proved to be: educational level (secondary education and incomplete higher education), number of children (having at least 3 children), frequency of using a bike (the more often, the more injuries), type of bike used (mountain bikes and fold-up bikes), and frequency of using a helmet (using helmets was correlated with a higher rate of injuries). The upper and lower extremities were the most common location of injuries.

Post-traumatic vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders following head trauma range from 15% to 78% in the general population. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common vestibular disorder in such patients. ⋯ Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo should be diagnosed and treated successfully in patients after head trauma.

Oncoplastic breast surgery originated in order to improve the esthetic result of breast-conserving surgery (BCS). Autologous free dermal fat graft (FDFG) is an emerging oncoplastic technique to improve the cosmetic outcome of breast-conserving surgery. ⋯ Immediate breast reconstruction by FDFG after BCS in a population selected for a low risk of breast cancer recurrence seems to be an oncologically safe option, with a good cosmetic outcome and a high prevalence of women satisfied with the treatment.

Observational Study
Mortality of patients with acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients has a deleterious impact on the prognosis, especially when renal replacement therapy (RRT) is required. This issue has not yet been investigated in the intensive care setting in Poland. ⋯ The mortality of critically ill AKI patients requiring RRT was significantly higher than in the overall ICU population. APACHE II scores underestimate mortality, especially in low-risk AKI-RRT subjects, and therefore should not be used in prognostic models in this cohort.
