The Relationship of Carotid Arterial Stiffness and Left Ventricular Concentric Hypertrophy in Hypertension.
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and geometry patterns vary in different hemodynamic profiles The concentric hypertrophy (CH) pattern has been proved to have the worst prognosis. ⋯ Concentric hypertrophy in hypertension is strongly associated with carotid arterial stiffness and wave reflection parameters, independently of the influence of systolic blood pressure and diabetes.

The Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Symptomatic Children: A 13-Year Observational Study in the Lower Silesian Region.
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is very common worldwide, with varying frequency. According to data from epidemiological reports, a third of the population of children in Poland are infected with H. pylori before the age of 18. In recent years, a decrease in the incidence of H. pylori infection in both children and adults has been observed in many countries. ⋯ There has been a decline in the prevalence of H. pylori infection in symptomatic children, but this infection is still a common cause of upper gastrointestinal tract symptoms in children treated at the authors' center. Primary antibiotic resistance of H. pylori increased over the period analyzed, but primary resistance to metronidazole declined.

Morton's neuroma, a painful enlargement of the plantar digital nerve between the metatarsal heads, is a common cause of metatarsalgia. The etiology and treatment are still a controversial matter. ⋯ Despite the development of less invasive techniques and very good outcomes in a short period of time, long-term results have shown that neurectomy is still useful in the treatment of Morton's neuroma. The results of the study show that the outcome does not change during the postoperative follow-up period. The best results were achieved in the case of single neuromas larger than 3 mm that were resected within 12 months of the onset of symptoms.

Iatrogenic anemia caused by diagnostic blood sampling is a common problem in the intensive care unit, where continuous monitoring of blood parameters is very often required. Cumulative blood loss associated with phlebotomy along with other factors render this group of patients particularly susceptible to anemia. ⋯ Iatrogenic blood loss has also gained particular attention in neonatal care, where cumulative blood loss due to samples taken during the first week of life could easily equal or exceed circulating blood volume. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the causes of iatrogenic anemia and discusses the most common preventive measures taken to reduce diagnostic blood loss and the requirement for blood component transfusions in the aforementioned clinical situations.

Inadequate pain monitoring and management in hospitalized patients poses a serious clinical problem which has been extensively covered in literature for over 25 years. ⋯ The barriers most frequently impeding pain therapy in elderly patients are associated with the healthcare system, and they were more frequently present on the anesthesiology and intensive care ward and in the emergency department, and occurred the least frequently on the surgical ward. Patient-related problems were more frequent on the anesthesiology and intensive care wards than in the emergency department. Doctor-related problems most frequently occurred on the gynecological ward, while nurse-related problems were more frequent on the anesthesiology and intensive care ward.
