The present study evaluated the efficacy, the safety and the predictability of the Femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Femto-LASIK) procedure for hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. We retrospectively analyzed the postoperative 12-month evolution of 593 eyes with hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism that underwent Femto-LASIK treatment. The procedure was predictable and effective. ⋯ There were no significant complications during the procedure. Femto-LASIK using the VisuMax®-MEL® 80 platform was demonstrated to be a suitable option to correct selected cases of hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. A longer follow-up period is required to better assess the refractive results and to detect any further regression.

The progression of acute lung injury (ALI) is attributable to inflammation and oxidative stress. The cell-permeable itaconate analog 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI) provides protection against inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. However, whether 4-OI can protect against ALI remains poorly understood. ⋯ Further study demonstrated that a pharmacological inhibitor of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt pathway, LY294002, inhibited the expression of NF-κB p65 in the nuclear fraction and decreased the production of inflammatory cytokines. Collectively, the experimental results of the present study provide evidence that 4-OI significantly decreased LPS-induced lung inflammation by suppressing ROS-mediated PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathways. These results suggest that 4-OI could be a valuable therapeutic drug in the treatment of ALI.

At the end of 2019, a new disease, similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) associated with SARS-CoV was reported in Wuhan, China. It was quickly discovered that the etiological factor of the new disease (COVID-19) was a previously unknown SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The global spread of of COVID-19 has lead to the declaration of a pandemic status in 2019-2020 as declared by the World Health Organization and Public Health Emergency of International Concern. ⋯ In the current review, the possibility of using interferon α (IFN-α) as a preventive agent of COVID-19 is discussed. The current data concerning anti-COVID-19 vaccines and specific drugs against SARS-CoV-2 are also discussed. The aim of the current review is to contribute to the introduction of a more efficient strategy in the protection of the human population against COVID-19.

The 'George N. Papanicolaou Medal' is a brass medal commissioned by the Academy of Athens on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr George N. Papanicolaou in 1983. ⋯ The ceremony was performed at the Central Hall of the Academy of Athens in Athens under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Democracy Constantinos Caramanlis. A copy of this medal is being exhibited at the 'Museum of Contemporary Sculpture Theodoros Papagiannis' in Elliniko at the Municipality of Katsanochoria close to Ioannina (Greece), as well as at the newly founded Institute of Paediatric Virology based on the island of Euboea, birth place of Dr George N. Papanicolaou.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by synovial proliferation and inflammation. Intra-articular corticosteroid injections are commonly used for the treatment of arthritis affecting one or two joints. Although corticosteroid injections are fast-acting, repeated usage can result in severe adverse events. ⋯ The semiquantitative score based on the histopathological findings for the distal femoral condyle decreased 2 and 4 weeks after both the PRF and steroid groups, compared with the sham PRF group. Moreover, in the synovium, the semiquantitative histological score in the PRF and steroid groups tended to be lower compared with the sham PRF group, although this result was not statistically significant. Thus, intra-articular PRF stimulation may delay cartilage destruction and improve functional motion in RA.
