Previous studies have shown that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has the potential to cause cognitive dysfunction. However, the underlying pathogenesis has yet to be fully elucidated. Increasing attention is being focused on infection in the central nervous system. ⋯ Additionally, the administration of LPS for 7 days induced a statistically significant increase in the expression level of Aβ in the hippocampus, compared with that in the control group (P<0.05). However, the administration of LPS did not elicit a statistically significant change in the expression level of BDNF in the hippocampus, compared with that in the control group (P>0.05). The results indicate that LPS induces cognitive dysfunction, which is associated with increased expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and Aβ, but does not affect the expression of BDNF in the hippocampus.

The aim of this study was to observe the effects of different types of fluid resuscitation on hepatic mitochondria and apoptosis in hemorrhagic shock, and the corresponding mechanisms. Forty rats were divided into five groups: Sham surgery (Sham group), shock (Shock group), Ringer's lactate resuscitation (RL group), hydroxyethyl starch resuscitation (HES group) and autologous blood resuscitation (BL group). A model of hemorrhagic shock was successfully induced in the latter four groups. ⋯ In the BL group, compared with the RL and HES groups, the injuries to the mitochondrial ultrastructure and liver cell function were significantly reduced, the hepatic ΔΨm and SDH activity were significantly increased and the hepatocyte apoptosis index (AI) was significantly reduced (P<0.05). In conclusion, in a rat model of hemorrhagic shock, different methods of fluid resuscitation may improve the liver cells with regard to mitochondrial ultrastructure and function, the stability of liver ΔΨm, the activity of SDH and the inhibition of liver cell apoptosis. The results indicate that infusion with autologous blood followed by RL solution is a preferable method of fluid resuscitation compared with HES.

The aim of this study was to compare carboprost with oxytocin for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in females with a high risk of PPH undergoing cesarean delivery. Patients were randomly divided into three groups that received different uterotonics (oxytocin, carboprost and oxytocin plus carboprost) during cesarean section, following the delivery of the infant. A total of 117 females (age range, 19-40 years) at 35-40 weeks gestation who delivered by cesarean between December, 2010 and May, 2012 were included in this study. ⋯ The blood loss in the carboprost group was significantly lower than that in the oxytocin and oxytocin plus carboprost groups (both P<0.05). Vomiting occurred in eight patients from the carboprost group, two from the oxytocin group and two from the oxytocin plus carboprost group (P=0.036). Carboprost was more effective than oxytocin in preventing PPH in high-risk patients undergoing cesarean delivery.

This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of thrombolytic and anticoagulant therapy for acute submassive pulmonary embolism (PE). A retrospective evaluation was performed on 25 consecutive inpatients with acute submassive PE treated by thrombolytic therapy and 25 earlier consecutive inpatients with acute submassive PE treated by anticoagulant therapy. No statistically significant difference in clinical curative effect was identified between the thrombolysis and anticoagulation groups (P>0.05). ⋯ Thrombolysis was shown to rapidly relieve dyspnea, reduce pulmonary arterial pressure and revascularize the embolized blood vessels. However, the hemorrhage rate of the thrombolysis group was higher than that of the anticoagulation group. The overall efficacies and fatality rates of the thrombolysis and anticoagulation groups were similar.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of catheter-directed thrombolysis combined with angioplasty in the treatment of hepatic vein obstruction in Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) complicated by thrombosis. In 14 cases of BCS, the patients with hepatic vein obstruction complicated by thrombosis who underwent catheter-directed urokinase thrombolysis, balloon dilatation and/or stent placement were followed up with an ultrasound examination of the liver. Among the 13 cases of successful treatment, one hepatic vein was recanalized in 12 patients (right hepatic vein, seven cases; left hepatic vein, three cases; middle hepatic vein, one case and accessory hepatic vein, one case) and two hepatic veins (right and left) were recanalized in one patient without serious complications, such as bleeding and pulmonary embolism. ⋯ During an average follow-up period of 24.8±19.6 months, hepatic vein restenosis was observed in one patient in the sixth month after opperation; however, a successful result was obtained following a second balloon dilatation. The remaining 12 patients did not demonstrate any recurrence of restenosis or thrombosis. Catheter-directed thrombolysis combined with angioplasty was observed to be an effective and safe method for the treatment of hepatic vein obstruction in BCS complicated by thrombosis.
