Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Comparison of ondansetron with metoclopramide in prevention of acute emesis associated with low dose & high dose cisplatin chemotherapy.
Nausea and vomiting remain the most distressing side effects of cancer chemotherapy. The present study aimed to study the efficacy and tolerability of ondansetron versus (vs) metoclopramide in different dose related grades of cisplatin induced acute emesis. ⋯ The results demonstrate dose related emetogenicity of cisplatin and superior antiemetic efficacy of ondansetron, especially against high dose cisplatin regimen. Dexamethasone potentiated efficacy of metoclopramide but not that of ondansetron. The combination of metoclopramide plus dexamethasone was found to be as efficacious as ondansetron monotherapy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Effect of inhalation of salbutamol, beclomethasone dipropionate & ipratropium bromide on mucociliary clearance in some patients with chronic stable bronchial asthma.
Asthma is now regarded as an inflammatory disease and bronchial inflammation may disrupt mucociliary function. Inhaled drugs may act by improving mucociliary function. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of salbutamol, ipratropium bromide and beclomethasone on mucociliary clearance in patients with chronic stable asthma and to compare the efficacy of these drugs on mucociliary clearance. ⋯ Inhalation of any of the three drugs tested did not produce any immediate improvement in mucociliary clearance as compared to placebo in patients with stable bronchial asthma suggesting the need for further studies using higher doses of drugs for longer duration in a large sample.

Information on the diameters of the cricoid cartilage in northwest Indian children and adults is scanty. As injury to the mucous membrane of the larynx could occur when an endotracheal tube or a laryngoscope, selected on the basis of western data, is introduced into the larynx of patients. It was, therefore, considered necessary to study the diameters of the cartilage. ⋯ The weight and other measurements of the cricoid cartilage in northwest Indians are smaller than those recorded in the western populations. The tubes of appropriate size should therefore be used for intubation in different age groups particularly in children based on measurements taken in Indians. Use of the western measurements/standards for this purpose is not recommended. In case of a highly decomposed body, the measurements and weight of the cartilage may be useful in gender determination.

The incidence of cervical cancer in India remains high, largely due to ineffective screening and poor patient compliance for follow up. A one step procedure where evaluation and treatment are performed at the same sitting may be a good strategy. Therefore the present study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of a see and treat protocol for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in a hospital population. ⋯ A single step see and treat protocol is a feasible management strategy for high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. However, patient education is essential before undertaking the procedure.

Frostbite, the severest form of cold injury is a serious medical problem for our Armed Forces operating in the snow bound areas at high altitude. Effects of treatment by rapid rewarming in tea decoction followed by combined therapy of pentoxifylline, aspirin and vitamin C were evaluated in amelioration of tissue damage due to experimentally induced frostbite in rats. ⋯ It is evident from the study that this combined therapy resulted in significant improvement in the degree of tissue preservation and proved to be highly beneficial as an immediate treatment of frostbite in rats. The combined pharmacological properties of these drugs might have altered the haemorrheologic status of blood and produced curative beneficial effect in improving tissue survival. Clinical studies are required for confirmation of these beneficial effects in humans, which has already been taken up.
