Mycobacterium bovis induced human tuberculosis in India: Current status, challenges & opportunities.
Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a leading cause of human deaths due to any infectious disease worldwide. However, infection of Mycobacterium bovis, primarily an animal pathogen, also leads to the development of 'human tuberculosis'. Infected animals have been considered the major source of M. bovis infection and humans get exposed to M. bovis through close contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated milk, unpasteurized dairy products and improperly cooked contaminated meat. ⋯ In recent years, there is a renewed interest for the control of bTB to minimize human infection worldwide. In India, while the sporadic presence of M. bovis has been reported in domestic animals, animal-derived food products and human beings from different geographical regions of the country, the information on the national prevalence of bTB and transmission dynamics of zoonotic TB is, however, not available. The present article reviewed published information on the status of M. bovis-induced zoonotic TB to highlight the key challenges and opportunities for intervention to minimize the risk of M. bovis infection in humans and secure optimum animal productivity in India.

Comparison between the effects of Maitland's mobilization versus its combination with vastus medialis oblique neuromuscular stimulation on two scales (NPRS & WOMAC) in knee osteoarthritis patients.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis that increases with age affecting the population from the middle age to the elderly. The present study was undertaken to find whether neuromuscular stimulation of vastus medialis oblique (VMO) in combination with Maitland's mobilization and exercises was more effective as compared to Maitland's mobilization with exercises alone in patients with knee OA. ⋯ Patients of both the groups (A and B) were found to be improving significantly in pain and disability, group A patients receiving Maitland's mobilization in combination with exercises were found to get more relief in pain and disability.

Lack of awareness is one of the major reasons for the high morbidity and mortality associated with cancers. The present study was aimed to evaluate the awareness of prevalent cancers among the rural population in a district of north India and its association specifically with mobile phone usage. ⋯ The findings of this study highlight the existing low level of awareness of cervical and breast cancers among the rural population. The association of cancer awareness with education level and mobile phone-based internet usage suggests the potential utility of internet-based platforms such as m-health programmes for cancer prevention activities.

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signalling pathway has been reported to be involved in metastasis and at the same time has been considered compellingly an important mediator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Besides, EMT process is maintained by zinc-finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) gene which is induced by TGF-β pathway. TGF-β has been shown to be associated with elevated microsatellite alterations at selected tetranucleotide repeats (EMAST) phenomenon, which is one of the prognostic biomarkers of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study was conducted to determine the link among ZEB1-induced TGF-β, EMAST status and metastasis. ⋯ Our results validated significant association between activated TGF-β signalling pathway and EMAST+ phenotype with higher expression of ZEB1 and higher level of metastasis.

Hydroxyurea (HU) has been useful in preventing sickle cell vaso-occlusive crises (VOC). A few studies also suggest utility of HU, during acute VOC. Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is of high prevalence in western districts of Odisha State, India, and VOC is a common presentation, despite being mostly of Arab-Indian haplotype. This study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of HU on hospital stay and analgesic utilization in acute painful VOC of SCA. ⋯ In this study, HU was found to have beneficial effects in acute VOC of homozygous SCD, which includes shortening the duration of hospital stay and reducing the net amount of analgesic utilization during hospitalization.
