Background & objectives Reducing maternal anaemia and enhancing feto-maternal health to achieve desired birth outcomes is a major health concern in India. Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy may impact fetal growth and neonatal outcomes. There is increasing interest in using multiple micronutrient supplement (MMS) during pregnancy. ⋯ Results The India-specific MMS formulation includes five minerals and 10 vitamins, similar to the United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation (UNIMMAP) composition. However, the quantities of all vitamins and minerals except Zinc, Vitamin E, and Vitamin B6 differ. Interpretation & conclusions This report provides an overview of the process adopted, the evidence evaluated, and the conclusions from the expert working group meetings to finalize an MMS supplement in pregnancy for the Indian context to be used in a research setting.

Background & objectives Genetic analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains circulating in India during 2020-2022 was carried out to understand the evolution of potentially expanding and divergent clades. Methods SARS-CoV-2 sequences (n=612) randomly selected from among the sequences of samples collected through a nationwide network of Virus Research Diagnostic Laboratories during 2020 (n=1532) and Indian sequences available in Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data during March 2020-March 2022 (n=53077), were analyzed using the phylo-geo haplotype network approach with reference to the Wuhan prototype sequence. Results On haplotype analysis, 420 haplotypes were revealed from 643 segregating sites among the sequences. ⋯ Interpretation & conclusions The haplotype analysis revealed that the G and GR clades were co-evolved and an epicentrefor the evolution of the GH, GK and GRA clades. GH was more frequently identified in northern parts of India than in other parts, whereas GK was detected less in north India than in other parts. Thus, the network analysis facilitated a detailed illustration of the pathways of evolution and circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Background & objectives Despite the evidence of population differences in miRNA expression, limited information is available about the expression profile of miRNAs in Indian tuberculosis (TB) patients. The present study aimed to investigate the expression profile of candidate serum exosomal microRNAs in Indian patients with and without HIV-TB coinfection. Methods The pool samples of serum exosomes of study participants (HIV-TB coinfection, extra-pulmonary TB, HIV mono-infection, pulmonary TB) and healthy humans were processed for the isolation of total RNA followed by miRNA analysis using miRCURY LNA human focus PCR panel by real-time PCR. ⋯ The set of three (hsa-let-7i-5p, hsa-miR-24-3p, hsa-miR-92a-3p), three (hsa-miR-20a-5p, hsa-let-7e-5p, hsa-miR-26a-5p) and four (hsa-miR-21-5p, hsa-miR-19a-3p, hsa-miR-19b-3p, hsa-miR-146a-5p) miRNAs were exclusively significantly differentially expressed in study participants with HIV-TB coinfection, extra-pulmonary TB and pulmonary TB, respectively. Most of the target genes of exclusively differentially expressed miRNAs were enriched in pathways in cancer, MAPK signalling pathway and Ras signalling pathway. Interpretation & conclusions The present study demonstrates a distinct expression profile of miRNAs in serum exosomes of the study participants and identified crucial miRNAs which may have a significant impact on the biomarker analysis and pathogenesis of TB in Indian patients.

Background & objectives Candida spp. cause candidiasis in humans under conditions disrupting the host defence. While Candida albicans is the most reported cause of candidiasis, there is a surge in the incidence of infections by non-albicans Candida species (NACs), such as C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and C. auris. These species can infect all organs of the human body. ⋯ This resource is integrated with visualization tools. Interpretation & conclusions EpiCandIn will be useful for public health researchers and policymakers as it will help them gain insights into the emerging trends and management of Candida infections in India. Background & objectives Presence of resistant gut flora in the community is associated with increasing multi-drug resistance (MDR) infections. In this study, the prevalence of MDR organisms in the gut flora of a healthy rural population residing in northern India was determined. Methods Healthy individuals aged 18-45 yr from Nuh district, Haryana, India were included in this study. ⋯ Resistance against fluoroquinolones was highest [92(48.7%)] among all isolates. Forty nine (25.9%), 25 (13.2%), 24 (12.7%) and 21 (11.1%) isolates, respectively were positive for blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTXM-1 and OXA-48 genes. Interpretation & conclusions Overall the study findings suggest that 27 per cent individuals from rural northern India carry MDR organisms in their fecal flora, with an ESBL carriage rate of 44 per cent.
