Mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) is being used after cardiac arrest for its expected improvement in neurological outcome. Safety of MTH concerning inducibility of malignant arrhythmias has not been satisfactorily demonstrated. This study compares inducibility of ventricular fibrillation (VF) before and after induction of MTH in a whole body swine model and evaluates possible interaction with changing potassium plasma levels. ⋯ According to our swine model, MTH does not increase the risk of VF induction by ventricular pacing in healthy hearts. Moreover, when combined with normokalemia, MTH exerts an antiarrhythmic effect despite prolonged QTc interval.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a condition that contributes to morbidity and mortality of critically ill patients. We investigated whether factors secreted by adipose stromal cells (ASC) into conditioned media (ASC-CM) will effectively decrease lung injury in the model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ARDS. ⋯ Factors secreted by ASC efficiently reduce ARDS indices, endothelial barrier hyperpermeability, and activation of pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic pathways in endothelium.

Inflammation plays an integral role in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Inflammatory response biomarkers have shown to be promising prognostic factors for improving the predictive accuracy in various cancers. The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic significance of pre-operative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) in gastric cancer (GC). ⋯ Pre-operative NLR and dNLR may serve as potential prognostic biomarkers in patients with GC who underwent surgical resection. The proposed nomograms can be used for the prediction of CSS and DFS in patients with GC who have undergone gastrectomy.

Tumour pharmacodynamics and circulating cell free DNA in patients with refractory colorectal carcinoma treated with regorafenib.
Regorafenib, a multi-kinase inhibitor, is used in the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer refractory to standard therapy. However, this benefit was limited to 1.4 months improvement in overall survival, with more than half of patients experiencing grade 3 to 4 adverse events. We aim to elucidate the pharmacodynamic effects of regorafenib in metastatic colorectal cancer and discover potential biomarkers that may predict clinical benefit. ⋯ Plasma circulating cell free DNA may yield potential predictive biomarkers of regorafenib treatment. Downregulation of the PI3K-AKT axis may be an important predictor of clinical benefit.

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hiPSC-MSCs) have emerged as a promising alternative for stem cell transplantation therapy. Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-Exos) can play important roles in repairing injured tissues. However, to date, no reports have demonstrated the use of hiPSC-MSC-Exos in cutaneous wound healing, and little is known regarding their underlying mechanisms in tissue repair. ⋯ Our findings suggest that hiPSC-MSC-Exos can facilitate cutaneous wound healing by promoting collagen synthesis and angiogenesis. These data provide the first evidence for the potential of hiPSC-MSC-Exos in treating cutaneous wounds.
