Review of our 10 years experience in cold burns at the burn center in the Southeast Anatolia region of Turkey.
Frostbite injuries remain to be one of the most complex and current problems of emergency medicine. Although cold burns are less frequent in hot climatic regions, it is a trauma, especially for men in our region. Also, most of the patients have difficulties in gaining early access to health and burn centers. ⋯ Deep frostbites in the cold winter months are frequently observed due to the unconscious use of ice and illegal crossings from the mountains at the Turkey border.

Sigmoid volvulus (SV), the wrapping of the sigmoid colon around itself, is a rare intestinal obstruction form world-wide. For this reason, the physiopathology of SV, particularly the precipitating factors, are not clearly identified. The aim of this study is to evaluate the precipitating factors in SV. ⋯ Although there are few studies about the precipitating factors of SV in the literature, increased bowel motility, excessive body motions, and overeating following a prolonged starvation look like the precipitating factors in the development of SV.

Case ReportsDetection of incidental schwannoma by traumatic hemothorax.
A case of hemothorax caused by traumatic rupture of schwannoma is rarely reported. We present a case of thorax injury of an 18-year-old woman who had fallen from a high place with a Glasgow Coma Score 13. Chest X-ray showed a left-sided massive pleural effusion. ⋯ The patient underwent an emergency thoracotomy after 2000 cc blood drainage with intercostal tube placement. Tumor's pathologic diagnosis was schwannoma (neurilemmoma). In this case study, we would like to present a traumatic hemothorax for the previously unknown mediastinal mass with the relevant literature.

Efficacy of Annona muricata (graviola) in experimental spinal cord injury: biochemical and histopathological analysis.
Annona muricata (AM) (graviola) is a plant that grows in tropical regions and is thought to be good for many diseases by local people. Unfortunately, there is no acceptable medical treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI) yet. In our study, we investigated the neuropeotective effects of AM leaf extract on SCI in an experimental rat model. ⋯ Our histopathological and biochemical results showed that AM is an agent with neuroprotective effects in trau-matic SCI.

Influence of galantamine on peripheral nerve degeneration after experimental compression injury of the rat sciatic nerve.
Galantamine is well-known for its neuroprotective effects and is currently used in the treatment of individuals with Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we induced experimental sciatic nerve injury (SCI) in rats to test the beneficial effects of galantamine. ⋯ In our experimental model, pharmacological intervention with galantamine demonstrated a protective effect on degeneration after peripheral nerve injury.
