[Eye injuries at a tertiary health center in the west Black Sea region, Turkey].
We aimed to investigate the clinical aspects and visual prognosis in eye injury and to constitute data in the west Black Sea region in Turkey for national statistics. ⋯ Eye injuries are still the most common and preventable cause of blindness. Simple precautions and public education might prevent this health problem, which causes economic and labor force loss and psychological problems. One of the basic precautions would be raising public awareness on wearing a seat belt inside the car and protective eyeglasses at the work site and while working in rural areas.

In this study, the data that could be obtained from our patient record system were investigated with respect to factors affecting the outcome in adult patients with head injury. ⋯ Age (p = 0.012), use of airway tube (p < 0.001), Glasgow Coma Scale values determined at the injury site and in the Emergency Unit (p < 0.001), clustered systolic and diastolic tricuspid annulus values (p < 0.001), accompanying chest (p = 0.001) and abdominal (p = 0.041) injury, anisocoria (p = 0.001), pupillary light response (p < 0.001), intracranial radiologic findings such as subdural hematoma (p < 0.001), brain contusion (p = 0.006), traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (p < 0.001), traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (p = 0.005), and brain edema ( p < 0.001), performance of a surgical procedure (p < 0.001), and presence of nosocomial infection (p < 0.001) were demonstrated to cause significant differences in the outcome. CONCLUSION The main aim must be to reduce accidents in an effort to reduce the number of deaths due to head injuries; additionally, emergency and hospital care facilities should be developed with respect to head injury cases.

Case ReportsTraditional Kehr's sign: Left shoulder pain related to splenic abscess.
Kehrs sign was originally described by the German surgeon Hans Kehr (1862-1916). It is a classical example of referred pain: irritation of the diaphragm is signaled by the phrenic nerve as pain in the area above the clavicle. We present a case of a 21-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department with the chief complaint of left shoulder pain related to splenic abscess.

Effect of epidural anesthesia on anastomotic leakage in colonic surgery: experimental study.
The association between the infusion of continuous epidural anesthesia and the anastomotic strength of colonic anastomosis was examined in an animal model. ⋯ We concluded that the strength of colonic anastomosis may be increased by epidural lidocaine infusion.

Case ReportsLate-diagnosed bilateral intertrochanteric femur fracture during an epileptic seizure.
Although spontaneous and simultaneous bilateral hip fractures without trauma are seen rarely, epileptic seizures may lead to these fractures. We present an 82-year-old female patient with poor bone quality and a 20-year history of epilepsy. ⋯ An earlier pelvic anteroposterior roentgenogram would be helpful for early diagnosis. It should not be forgotten that bone fractures may be observed without trauma in epilepsy patients.
