Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Elevated plasma tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 level predicts decreased response and survival in metastatic breast cancer.
Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMPs) have at least 2 different functions. They inhibit the catalytic activity of matrix metalloproteinases, and they act as growth factors. ⋯ Elevated pretreatment plasma levels of TIMP-1 predicted a decreased response to second-line hormone therapy and reduced survival in women with metastatic breast cancer.

Validation and comparison of contemporary prognostic models in primary myelofibrosis: analysis based on 334 patients from a single institution.
Survival in primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is predicted by several prognostic scoring systems (PSSs); the most widely recognized is that of Dupriez. Two other PSSs, Cervantes and Mayo, were recently reported as being more useful in younger patients. The current study compares these 3 PSSs among all age groups. ⋯ The Mayo PSS for survival in PMF is an objective CBC-derived prognostic model that might be superior in its performance over that of either the Dupriez and Cervantes PSSs.

The objectives of this study were to study the probability of local control after breast-conserving therapy (BCT) in a large population of patients with early-stage breast cancer aged < or = 40 years and to determine which factors had prognostic value. ⋯ The risk of local recurrence in young patients who underwent BCT was reduced strongly by using adjuvant systemic treatment. This finding may provide an argument if favor of advising the use of systemic treatment for all patients aged < or = 40 years who undergo BCT.

The role of interstitial brachytherapy (IBT) in the salvage surgical management of regional lymphatic metastases for head and neck cancer has not been defined to date. To further explore its therapeutic benefit in the management of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, the authors reviewed their experience utilizing IBT at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. ⋯ Regional recurrences are common after multimodality treatment for head and neck cancer and are challenging to manage. Although its role has not been defined clearly, salvage neck dissection with IBT is beneficial in the management of recurrent lymphatic metastases of upper aerodigestive tract carcinomas.
