Socioeconomic status affects survival in patients diagnosed with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), even in health systems with universal health care. Singapore has a tiered subsidized housing system, in which income determines eligibility for subsidies by size of apartment. The objective of this study was to assess whether a patient's residential type (small/heavily subsidized, medium/moderate subsidy, large/minimal or no subsidy) influenced mortality. A secondary analysis examined whether patients in smaller subsidized apartments were more likely to present with advanced disease. ⋯ Patients with HNSCC living in smaller, higher-subsidy apartments have poorer survival despite no apparent delays in presentation. Few large, prospective, randomized studies have investigated the effectiveness of esophagectomy in patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (TESCC) who receive definitive radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) through modern, intensity modulated-RT (IMRT) techniques. The therapeutic effects of esophagectomy in patients with TESCC were evaluated using modern clinical staging and RT techniques and suitable RT doses. ⋯ Esophagectomy can be beneficial in patients with TESCC after definitive CCRT, especially in those who have advanced-stage disease. As panel testing becomes more common in clinical practice, it is important to understand the prevalence and trends associated with the pathogenic variants (PVs) identified. This is especially true for genetically heterogeneous cancers, such as breast cancer (BC), in which PVs in different genes may be associated with various risks and cancer subtypes. The authors evaluated the outcomes of genetic testing among women who had a personal history of BC. ⋯ These results demonstrate that panel testing increased the number of women identified as carrying a PV in this cohort compared with BRCA testing alone. Furthermore, the proportion of women identified who carried a PV in this cohort did not decrease between ages 40 and 59 years. Cancer 2017;123:1721-1730. © 2017 American Cancer Society.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Addressing multilevel barriers to cervical cancer screening in Korean American women: A randomized trial of a community-based intervention.
Korean American women have among the lowest rates of cervical cancer screening in the United States. The authors evaluated a multicomponent intervention combining community education with navigation services to reduce access barriers and increase screening rates in this underserved population. It was hypothesized that cervical cancer screening rates would be higher among women who received the intervention program compared with those in the control program. ⋯ A multicomponent intervention combining community cancer education with navigation services yielded significant increases in cervical cancer screening rates among underscreened Korean American women. Community-accessible programs that incorporate cancer education with the delivery of key navigation services can be highly effective in increasing cervical cancer screening rates in this underserved population. To evaluate the impact of depression before autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on clinical outcomes post-transplantation. ⋯ Pre-transplant depression was associated with lower OS and higher risk of acute GVHD among allogeneic HCT recipients and fewer days alive and out of the hospital during the first 100 days after autologous and allogeneic HCT. Patients with pre-transplant depression represent a population that is at risk for post-transplant complications. Cancer 2017;123:1828-1838. © 2017 American Cancer Society.
