Induction of p53-specific immunity by a p53 synthetic long peptide vaccine in patients treated for metastatic colorectal cancer.
The tumor-associated self-antigen p53 is commonly overexpressed in cancer, including colorectal cancer, and can serve as a target for immunotherapy. The safety and immunogenicity of a p53 synthetic long peptide (p53-SLP) vaccine were investigated in patients treated for metastatic colorectal cancer. ⋯ The p53-SLP vaccine is safe and capable to induce p53-specific T-cell responses in patients treated for colorectal cancer. New trials should focus on improving the polarization of the p53-SLP vaccine-induced T-cell response.

Ixabepilone in combination with capecitabine and as monotherapy for treatment of advanced breast cancer refractory to previous chemotherapies.
To describe the considerations leading to marketing approval of ixabepilone in combination with capecitabine and as monotherapy for the treatment of advanced breast cancer that is refractory to other chemotherapies. ⋯ On October 16, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration approved ixabepilone for injection in combination with capecitabine or as monotherapy for the treatment of patients with advanced breast cancer who have experienced disease progression on previous chemotherapies.

Cyclin D1 expression in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant tamoxifen-based therapy.
The objective of our study was to determine the clinical relevance of cyclin D1 expression in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients who were treated with tamoxifen-based therapy. ⋯ Cyclin D1 expression is an independent poor prognostic factor in women with early-stage, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who received adjuvant tamoxifen-based therapy.

Insulin treatment in cancer cachexia: effects on survival, metabolism, and physical functioning.
The present study was designed to evaluate whether daily insulin treatment for weight-losing cancer patients attenuates the progression of cancer cachexia and improves metabolism and physical functioning in palliative care. ⋯ Insulin is a significant metabolic treatment in multimodal palliation of weight-losing cancer patients.

Class III beta-tubulin expression and benefit from adjuvant cisplatin/vinorelbine chemotherapy in operable non-small cell lung cancer: analysis of NCIC JBR.10.
High class III beta-tubulin (bTubIII) expression in advanced non-small cell lung cancer is known to correlate with reduced response rates and inferior survival with anti-microtubule agents. JBR.10 showed a 12% and 15% improvement in 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS), respectively, with the addition of cisplatin and vinorelbine following resection of stage IB-II non-small cell lung cancer. We sought to determine the effect of bTubIII on patient outcome and benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy in the JBR.10 trial. ⋯ Chemotherapy seemed to overcome the negative prognostic effect of high bTubIII expression. Greater benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy was seen in patients with high bTubIII expression. This is contrary to what has been seen in the setting of advanced disease; possible reasons for this difference are being explored.
