Identification of miR-140-3p as a marker associated with poor prognosis in spinal chordoma.
To investigate the expression profile of miR-140-3p in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues of spinal chordoma, and its correlation with the prognosis of spinal chordoma patients. ⋯ Over-expression of miR-140-3p is correlated with recurrence and tumor invasion, suggesting that miR-140-3p could be a new predictor for recurrence and prognosis in patients with spinal chordoma.

ReviewPrimary atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor of central nervous system in children: a clinicopathological analysis and review of literature in China.
Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) is a very rare and highly malignant embryonal tumor in the central nervous system (CNS). Five patients (4 girls and 1 boy) with AT/RT were treated in our hospital. The clinical histories, symptoms, neuroimaging aspects, therapies, histological and immunohistochemical findings and follow-up information were reviewed. ⋯ One case with no recurrence after 24 months may have benefited from radical excision and postoperative radiotherapy. The other 4 patients died 8, 4, 1 and 1-month respectively after operation without radiotherapy. The diagnosis of AT/RT depends on full sampling, careful observation the morphological characteristics and INI1 examination, even when the tumor are presented in uncommon sites, such as the spinal cord and the pineal region.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of sevoflurane and propofol on right ventricular function and pulmonary circulation in patients undergone esophagectomy.
Sevoflurane and propofol are both widely used in clinical anesthesia. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of sevoflurane and propofol on right ventricular function and pulmonary circulation in patients receiving esophagectomy. ⋯ Anesthesia with sevoflurane preserved better right ventricular function than propofol in patients receiving esophagectomy. However, propofol improved oxygenation and shunt fraction during one-lung ventilation compared with sevoflurane anesthesia. To have the best effect, anesthesiologists can choose the two anesthetics flexibly according to the monitoring results.

Comparative StudyDownregulated interleukin 37 expression associated with aggravation of intervertebral disc degeneration.
Interleukin 37 (IL-37) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine which was proven to be associated with several diseases characterized with excessive-inflammation. The pathologic process of Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is also companied by uncurbed inflammation, many cytokines were reported presenting in the process. However, there is little IL-37 related knowledge in IVDD up to now. ⋯ Instead, significant elevated gene expression of IL-1β, IL-16, TNF-α, TGF-β1 and Smad3 were detected in degenerative samples. High correlations were observed between IL-37, IL-1β, IL-16, TGF-β1, Smad3 and degeneration degree of IVD. Downregulation of IL-37 expression appeared to result in overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and IL-16, in degenerative IVD and may be a contributor involved in the progression of IVDD.

Alveolar epithelial cells in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis display upregulation of TRAIL, DR4 and DR5 expression with simultaneous preferential over-expression of pro-apoptotic marker p53.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive, debilitating, and fatal lung disease of unknown aetiology with no current cure. The pathogenesis of IPF remains unclear but repeated alveolar epithelial cell (AEC) injuries and subsequent apoptosis are believed to be among the initiating/ongoing triggers. However, the precise mechanism of apoptotic induction is hitherto elusive. ⋯ Cell cycle regulatory proteins Cyclin D1 and SOCS3 were significantly enhanced in AEC within the remodelled fibrotic areas of IPF lungs but expression was negligible in myofibroblasts. Taken together these findings suggest that, within the remodelled fibrotic areas of IPF, AEC can display markers associated with proliferation, senescence, and apoptotosis, where TRAIL could drive the apoptotic response. Clear understanding of disease processes and identification of therapeutic targets will direct us to develop effective therapies for IPF.
