MicroRNA-34a negatively regulates anesthesia-induced hippocampal apoptosis and memory impairment through FGFR1.
Mounting evidence has shown the toxic effects of anesthesia to neonatal hippocampus. We used an in vivo mouse model to explore the role of microRNA 34a (miR-34a) in regulating anesthesia-induced hippocampal neurotoxicity. ⋯ Overall, we showed that miR-34a negatively modulated anesthesia-induced hippocampal neurotoxicity.

Liquid-based cytological test of samples obtained by catheter aspiration is applicable for the bronchoscopic confirmation of pulmonary malignant tumors.
The aim of the present study is to confirm the value of electronic bronchoscopy-aided catheter aspiration technique with liquid-based cytological test in the diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma. A total of 815 patients of lung cancer were evaluated by bronchoscopy between February 2011 and June 2012. Catheter aspiration technique and forceps biopsy during bronchoscopy were employed to obtain adequate tissue specimens. ⋯ For catheter aspiration, the positive rate of lung cancer by liquid-based cytological test was superior to that by conventional smears (P<0.05). The catheter aspiration is a sampling technique that produces higher diagnostic rate for lung cancers compared with forceps biopsy. Liquid-based cytological test is routinely applicable for the diagnosis of lung cancer using samples collected through electronic bronchoscopy.

Randomized Controlled TrialGinsenoside Rg3 inhibits HIF-1α and VEGF expression in patient with acute leukemia via inhibiting the activation of PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2 pathways.
Aberrant angiogenesis is essential to the development and progression of leukemia. Ginsenoside Rg3 has been commonly used in anti-angiogenic therapy of solid tumors. This study aimed to investigate the anti-angiogenic effects of Rg3 in patients with acute leukemia. ⋯ In addition, Rg3 treatment led to reduced serum levels of HIF-1α and VEGF in patients with acute leukemia. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that Rg3 downregulated the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK1/2 in BMSCs. In conclusion, Rg3 exhibits anti-leukemia effect in part due to its anti-angiogenic activity via inhibiting PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2 pathways, which act to regulate the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF.

Neutrophil CD64 expression is a predictor of mortality for patients in the intensive care unit.
Neutrophil CD64 has been shown to be a promising biomarker for bacterial infection and sepsis identification. However, the prognostic value of CD64 in predicting the likelihood of survival for patients in intensive care unit (ICU) is unclear. ⋯ CD64 had the greatest power for predicting ICU mortality other than APACHE II scores. This result indicates that CD64 may be used as a biomarker to in combination with the use of APACHE II scores to improve the accuracy of predicting mortality outcome for patients in the ICU.

Clinical significance of NQO1 polymorphism and expression of p53, SOD2, PARP1 in limited-stage small cell lung cancer.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is one of highly aggressive cancers with poor prognosis. Unfortunately, there are as yet no molecular targets that can be exploited to prolong survival in patients with SCLC. This study aimed to investigate possible molecular markers associated with prognosis in limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). ⋯ PARP1 expression is correlated with longer progression-free survival in LS-SCLC requiring further studies to clarify the precise role of PARP1 and the relevance of PARP1-targeted therapy.
