Transfer of human hepatocyte growth factor reduces inflammation and prevents pulmonary arterial remodeling in monocrotaline-induced.
Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction contribute to the pathogenesis and development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of human hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene transfer on monocrotaline (MCT) induced PAH rat models. PAH was induced by injecting MCT for 4 weeks. ⋯ IL-10 in HGF treatment-group significantly increased compared with MCT-group, but lower than that of control group (all P < 0.05). Endothelial microparticles (EMP) started to decrease in the HGF treatment-group 3 days after treatment and was most significant after 1 and 2 weeks of treatment (all P < 0.05). Our results showed that transfer of human HGF may attenuate the inflammatory cell infiltrate, reduce the expression of inflammatory factors, and those effects are possibly due to the inhibition of EMP production which may decrease pulmonary vascular wall damage in PAH.

Diosmetin ameliorates the severity of cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis in mice by inhibiting the activation of the nuclear factor-κB.
Diosmetin (3', 5, 7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavone), the aglycone part of the flavonoid glycosides diosmin occurs naturally in citrus fruit, was considered to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of diosmetin in a murine model of cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis (AP). Experimental AP was induced in mice by seven intraperitoneal injection of cerulein (50 ug/kg) at hourly intervals. ⋯ Pretreatment with diosmetin significantly reduced serum levels of amylase and lipase; the histological injury; the secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6; myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, trypsinogen activation peptide (TAP) level, the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS); and the nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation in cerulein-induced AP. This study showed that administration of diosmetin demonstrated a beneficial effect on the course of cerulein-induced AP in mice. Therefore, diosmetin may become a new therapeutic agent in future clinical trials for treatment of AP.

Review Case ReportsThe ambiguous boundary between EBV-related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and systemic EBV-driven T cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
Epstein Barr virus (EBV)-related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) is a form of acquired, infection-related HLH which typically represents a fulminant presentation of an acute EBV infection of CD8+ T cells with 30-50% mortality rate. Systemic EBV-positive lymphoproliferative disease of childhood (SE-LPD) is a rare T cell lymphoproliferative disorder predominantly arising in the setting of acute EBV infection, often presenting with HLH. Since both entities have been associated with clonal T cell populations, the discrimination between these diseases is often ambiguous. ⋯ Given the karyotypic findings in this sentinel case, a diagnosis of SE-LPD was rendered. The overlapping clinical and pathologic findings suggest that EBV-HLH and SE-LPD are a biologic continuum, rather than discrete entities. The most clinically useful marker of mortality was an abnormal karyotype rather than other standards of clonality assessment.

Review Case ReportsPrimary spinal intradural extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma mimicking a giant nerve sheath tumor: case report and review of the literature.
Primary intradural extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is a very rare form of malignant neoplasm. Only few cases have been reported on the literature. ⋯ The patient initially seemed to have a giant nerve sheath tumor but was eventually diagnosed with intradural extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma arising from the nerve roots of the cauda equine. The literature with regard to primary spinal intradural extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is reviewed.

Case ReportsMeningitis and pneumococcal pyomyositis in a child with intramuscular hemangiomas: an autopsy case report.
Pyomyositis is the bacterial infection of skeletal muscle, usually accompanied by abscesses. The main etiologic agent is Staphylococcus aureus. ⋯ The authors propose the hypothesis that patients with hemangiomas, mainly the intramuscular type, may also represent a risk group for pyomyositis. The possibility of respiratory/meningeal co-infection, might also be considered even if the clinical picture is restricted to the muscular system.
