The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical relevance of the pre-operative granulocyte/lymphocyte (G/L) ratio as a predictive marker of post-operative complications in patients with colorectal cancer. In total, 85 patients (59 males and 26 females; mean age, 68.9 years) underwent surgery for colorectal cancer at the Department of Surgery, Ibraki Medical Center, Tokyo Medical University (Ami, Japan), and were divided into post-operative complication and non-complication groups. Clinical data, including age, gender, body mass index, tumor localization, tumor pathological type, cancer staging, surgery time, volume of surgical bleeding, pre-operative G/L ratio and further pre-operative laboratory data, including levels of albumin and C-reactive protein, Glasgow Prognostic Score, white blood cell count and levels of hemoglobin, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were analyzed between these groups. ⋯ On univariate analysis, the amount of surgical bleeding and the pre-operative G/L ratio were significantly higher in the complication group than in the non-complication group (299.8±361.7 vs. 155.6±268.6 ml, P<0.05; and 6.73±10.38 vs. 3.49±2.78, P<0.05, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis for the risk factors of post-operative complications, determined using univariate analysis, demonstrated that the amount of surgical bleeding and the pre-operative G/L ratio were independent risk factors of post-operative complications in patients with colorectal cancer. In conclusion, the G/L ratio may be a clinically relevant pre-operative predictive marker for post-operative complications.

To investigate the effect and mechanism of the CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) in the proliferation and migration of breast cancer, a short-hairpin RNA (shRNA) eukaryotic expression vector targeting CXCR4 was constructed, and the impact of such on the proliferation, adhesion and migration of human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells was observed. The fragments of CXCR4-shRNA were synthesized and cloned into a pGCsi-U6-Neo-green fluorescent protein vector. The recombinant plasmids were transfected into 293T cells and the most efficacious interfering vector was selected. ⋯ CXCR4-shRNA transfection significantly inhibited the proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells (P<0.05), as well as the adhesion between MDA-MB-231 cells and the extracellular matrix (P<0.05). Furthermore, wound-healing assays demonstrated that the migration distance of MDA-MB-231 cells in the CXCR4-shRNA transfection group was significantly smaller than that in the control plasmid and blank control groups (P<0.01). The CXCR4-shRNA interfering vector specifically inhibited CXCR4 expression, as well as the proliferation, adhesion and migration of MDA-MB-231 cells.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the risk factors of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) of elective craniotomy for patients presenting with brainstem tumors or tumors adjacent to the brainstem. A total of 162 consecutive patients with a brainstem tumor or adjacent brainstem tumor undergoing elective craniotomy were included and monitored. Potential risk factors were identified by data collection and monitoring of the PPCs, as well as the performance of single factor analysis (using the χ2 test). ⋯ A total of 39 cases of PPC were included in the current study, with an incidence rate of 23.9%. The analysis indicated that smoking history, previous pulmonary diseases, an American Society of Anesthesiologists classification >II and partial tumor resection were risk factors of PPC following an elective craniotomy. Smoking history and partial tumor resection were identified to be independent risk factors of PPCs.

Kin17 protein is ubiquitously expressed in mammals and is correlated with vital biological functions. However, little is known about the role of Kin17 in the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the upregulation of Kin17 can promote the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells. ⋯ The western blotting results revealed that Kin17 expression was increased in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues compared with that of the corresponding normal tissues. Moreover, ectopic upregulation of Kin17 expression promoted the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo. These results indicated that Kin17 is involved in the tumorigenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma, and that Kin17 has the potential to serve as a therapeutic target for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Cystic lymphangioma mainly occurs in children. Cystic mediastinal lymphangioma (CML) originates from mediastinal tissues and is an extremely uncommon cystic lymphangioma that develops from the lymphatic vessels. The present study reports the case of 46-year-old male patient with a giant CML that was surgically resected by video-assisted thoracoscopy. ⋯ The postoperative pathological reports on the cystic wall showed that the neoplasm was a CML. At present, at the one-year postoperative follow-up, there are no signs of recurrence. In conclusion, complete surgical resection may prevent recurrence.
