Delayed neurological deterioration in the absence of direct cord insult following surgical removal and cord decompression is a rare but severe postoperative complication in a small subset of patients with intraspinal meningiomas. To date, the underlying pathophysiology of such a finding remains unclear and ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is considered as the potential etiology in the literature. However, no experimental research has been reported to prove this hypothesis. ⋯ These findings demonstrated IRI may occur as a result of chronic severe compression of the spinal cord. In clinical practice, sudden cord expansion and reperfusion may have lead to disruption in the blood spinal cord barrier, and triggered a cascade of IRI resulting in postoperative neurologic deterioration. Recognition of this neurological deterioration following removal for intraspinal meningiomas may improve preoperative patient counseling and merits further study for determination of the precise pathophysiology.

Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (CD147) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) have been documented in various malignancies. CD147 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, which promotes the production and release of MMPs in mesenchymal cells and tumor cells. MMP-2 has been extensively studied and is considered to be particularly important in cancer invasion and metastasis. ⋯ CD147 and MMP-2 overexpression was positively correlated with aggressive phenotypic features in EEC, however it was negatively correlated with hormone receptor expression. The combination of CD147 and MMP-2 overexpression in EEC further distinguished a subgroup of patients with poor prognosis. Thus, the results of present study indicate that the co-expression of CD147 and MMP-2 may be an independent prognostic factor in EEC patients.

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare tumor with an incidence of 2.5 per million individuals. Early diagnosis is difficult as there is an absence of specific clinical presentations. The present case study reports a patient diagnosed with retroperitoneal liposarcoma who was treated by complete surgical resection and relapsed 3 months following the surgery. ⋯ However, no patients received chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In conclusion, retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare disease with a high rate of recurrence. Complete resection is the predominant treatment and combined resection of adjacent organs is occasionally necessary.

Detection of esophageal dysplasia/early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is essential for improving 5-year survival. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate whether Lugol chromoendoscopy improves the detection of esophageal dysplasia/early ESCC in patients with esophageal symptoms in a low-incidence region in China. Eligible patients were randomly assigned into two groups who received routine endoscopy or Lugol chromoendoscopy. ⋯ In the chromoendoscopy group, 213 patients had unstained lesions of >0.5 cm, the detection rates of dysplasia/early carcinoma were 5.3% (4/76) in those with lesions of 0.5-1.0 cm, and 37.2% (51/137) in those with lesions >1.0 cm (χ2=21.46, P<0.001). These results indicate that Lugol chromoendoscopy improves the detection rate of esophageal dysplasia/early carcinoma in patients with esophageal symptoms compared with routine endoscopy. We propose that Lugol chromoendoscopy must therefore be considered in addition to routine endoscopy in patients with esophageal symptoms.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have previously been reported to be involved in cancer invasion, proliferation and apoptosis. However, the association between the lncRNA, H19, and esophageal cancer (EC) has remained elusive. ⋯ In addition, it was identified that an upregulation of H19 induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, while the opposite effect was observed following the downregulation of H19. In conclusion, H19 has a significant role in the development of EC and may serve as a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target for EC.
