The risk of contracting AIDS and hepatitis through blood transfusions has decreased over the past few years, thanks to a growing awareness of their natures and improved methods of blood screening. Testing blood donors for HIV antibody has greatly reduced the possibility of acquiring transfusion-associated AIDS. Routine use of ALT and anti-HBc testing will reduce the changes of hepatitis. And accepting blood only from CMV-negative donors can help prevent transfusion-associated CMV infections in susceptible recipients.

Administration of opioids by less conventional routes may produce pain relief of more rapid onset, of longer duration, and fewer side effects in comparison with conventional oral or parenteral administration. This review will discuss the indications, efficacy, complications and potential advantages of these novel routes of administration.
