ALPPS (associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy) is a novel two-stage strategy to induce rapid hypertrophy of the future liver remnant (FLR) when patients are in danger of postoperative liver failure due to insufficient FLR. However, the effects of ALPPS on colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are not clear so far. The aim of our study was to determine whether ALPPS induces proliferation, apoptosis, or vascularization compared to standard (one-stage) liver resection. ⋯ ALPPS does not induce proliferation, apoptosis, or vascularization of CRLM when compared to standard liver resection.

Although two main methods of intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are currently accepted, the superiority of one over the other has not yet been demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are hemodynamic and temperature differences between patients who received HIPEC in two different techniques, open versus closed abdomen. ⋯ Both HIPEC procedures are similar. In our series, the closed technique resulted in a more stable intra-abdominal temperature.

We sought to investigate the efficacy of serum D-dimer, fibrinogen, and CA19-9 for postoperative monitoring and prediction of survival in patients with resectable pancreatic carcinoma (PC). ⋯ For postoperative monitoring of patients with resectable PC, D-dimer, fibrinogen, and CA19-9 may be used as markers for monitoring disease relapse, but only preoperative D-dimer could predict survival.

Pulmonary metastases occur in up to 25% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Many studies have reported that pulmonary metastasectomy might increase 5-year survival of these patients. The aim of this study was to describe our experience with pulmonary metastasectomy for metastatic colorectal cancer and to explore the prognostic value of p53 overexpression and other factors. ⋯ Pulmonary resection of metastatic colorectal cancer might offer a chance to prolong survival including those patients with extrapulmonary metastases. p53 protein expression was identified as a prognosis-related factor for surgery.

Minimally invasive oesophagectomy versus open esophagectomy for resectable esophageal cancer: a meta-analysis.
Open esophagectomy (OE) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIO) reduces complications in resectable esophageal cancer. The aim of this study is to explore the superiority of MIO in reducing complications and in-hospital mortality than OE. ⋯ MIO is superior to OE in terms of perioperative complications and in-hospital mortality.
