Incidence and risk factors of spinal epidural hemorrhage after spine surgery: a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of a national database.
With increasing number of patients undergoing spine surgery, the spinal epidural hemorrhage (SEH) has become a growing concern. However, current studies on SEH rely on case reports or observations from a single center. Our study attempted to demonstrate the incidence rate and risk factors of SEH using a national dataset. ⋯ Although severe SEH cases were not detected, the incidence of SEH was similar to that reported in literature. Given that SEH is a rare complication of spine surgery and constitutes an important research area that needs to be studied further, our study makes a meaningful contribution based on a rigorous national level sample for the first time and provides the academic circle and health professionals with a reliable evidence of improved clinical outcomes in such cases.

Adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the simplified Chinese version of the identification of functional ankle instability questionnaire in Chinese-speaking patients with chronic ankle instability disorders.
The aims of this study were to adapt the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) questionnaire into a simplified Chinese version and to assess its reliability, validity, and responsiveness in Chinese-speaking patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) disorders. ⋯ The SC-IdFAI scale may be an effective tool, and it is responsive, reliable and valid for the assessment of Chinese patients suffering from CAI.

Autologous adipose tissue injection versus platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: a randomized, controlled study - study protocol.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common, chronic, progressive and degenerative disease which affects patients' quality of life and may cause disability and social isolation. OA is a huge economic burden for the patient and a large strain for the whole healthcare system. Articular cartilage has a small potential to repair, with progressively more clinicians emphasizing cellular therapy. Subcutaneous fat tissue in human body is a large reservoir of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and is been harvested in minimally invasive, simple procedure. Up to date there is no prospective randomized controlled studies demonstrating effectiveness and role of adipose tissue injections in OA treatment. The purpose of this study is to assess functional and clinical changes among patients with symptomatic knee OA treated with intra-articular injections of autologous adipose tissue or platelet rich plasma (PRP) and to compare efficacy of both therapeutic methods. ⋯ This study protocol has several strengths and weaknesses. One of strongest point of this study is the wide, multidimensional functional assessment which will give a large amount of objective data. On the other hand, lack of blinding has to be considered as a risk of both subject and investigator bias.

Accumulative occlusion time correlates with postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing pelvic and sacrum tumor resection assisted by abdominal aortic balloon occlusion: a retrospective cohort study.
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) seems to be high in patients undergoing pelvic and sacrum tumor resection assisted by abdominal aortic balloon occlusion. We hypothesized that the accumulative occlusion time (AOT) of the abdominal aortic balloon may be predictive of PPCs. The objective of the study was to identify the influence of AOT on PPCs. ⋯ The incidence of PPCs in patients undergoing the pelvic and sacrum tumor surgery assisted by abdominal aortic balloon occlusion was 15.6%. AOT ≥ 119 min was an independent predictor for PPCs. Surgeons should strive to minimize the AOT within 2 h.

Observational StudyPoor outcome of octogenarians admitted to ICU due to periprosthetic joint infections: a retrospective cohort study.
Even though surgical techniques and implants have evolved, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains a serious complication leading to poor postoperative outcome and a high mortality. The literature is lacking in studies reporting the mortality of very elderly patients with periprosthetic joint infections, especially in cases when an intensive care unit (ICU) treatment was necessary. We therefore present the first study analyzing patients with an age 80 and higher suffering from a periprosthetic joint infection who had to be admitted to the ICU. ⋯ Very elderly patients with PJI who needs to be admitted to the ICU are at risk to suffer from a poor outcome. Several risk factors including a chronic infection, high SAPS II Score, high CCI, invasive ventilation and RRT might be associated with a poor outcome.
