Displaced humeral shaft fractures in children and adolescents: results and adverse effects in patients treated by elastic stable intramedullary nailing.
The objectives of this study were to retrospectively investigate the clinical and radiological outcome of humeral shaft fractures treated by ESIN in children <16 years old and to evaluate the functional outcome of these injuries using the short version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Outcome questionnaire (Quick DASH(®)). ⋯ The study shows good clinical and functional outcomes in children and adolescents with closed isolated fractures of the humeral shaft surgically treated by ESIN, even with ensuing mild residual frontal and sagittal plane deformity. However, conservative treatment has also been advocated in the scientific literature for this type of injuries, and surgical treatment should not be considered as the only option for the management of humeral shaft fractures in older children and adolescents.

Hip hemiarthroplasty for femur neck fractures: minimally invasive direct anterior approach versus postero-lateral approach.
The minimally invasive direct anterior approach (MDAA) has been reported to be useful in total hip arthroplasty. The benefits of this approach may be useful for the treatment of femoral neck fractures. Aim of this study is to compare MDAA and postero-lateral approach (PLA) in patients treated with hip hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. ⋯ Therapeutic study, level IV (case series).

Functional versus patient-reported outcome of the bicruciate and the standard condylar-stabilizing total knee arthroplasty.
The purpose of this retrospective comparative analysis in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was to evaluate whether different TKA implant design would influence patient-rated outcomes, functioning, and range of motion (ROM). A secondary purpose of this study was to test for relationships between the patient-rated outcomes and the passive ROM. ⋯ III.

Improving acute kidney injury management in lower limb arthroplasty: an educational approach.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common but preventable cause of morbidity in elective arthroplasty patients. This study aimed to review the incidence and management of AKI in patients undergoing elective lower limb arthroplasty and compare results to those after the introduction of educational measures to improve prevention, recognition and management of AKI. ⋯ This quality improvement project has demonstrated the significant impact that simple educational measures can have on improving AKI prevention, recognition and management in patients undergoing elective arthroplasty surgery. The introduction of a logical treatment checklist has been well received by both medical and nursing staff and ensures prompt and efficient management of AKI in a non-specialist area.

Outcome after olecranon fracture repair: Does construct type matter?
This study compares clinical and functional outcomes of patients with displaced olecranon fractures treated with either tension band wiring (TBW) or a hook plate construct. ⋯ TBW and PF of olecranon fractures had similarly excellent functional outcomes in this study. Patients undergoing PF had a longer time to union and slightly worse extension at final follow-up. TBW remains an effective treatment for appropriately selected olecranon fractures and in this cohort outperformed plate osteosynthesis.
