Correction of severe pelvic obliquity using maximum-width segmental sacropelvic screw fixation: an analysis of 20 neuromuscular scoliosis patients.
The present study was a retrospective analysis. ⋯ Maximum-width (M-W) segmental sacropelvic fixation, comprising iliosacral screws and/or iliac screws, enables a superior correction of severe pelvic obliquity in patients with neuromuscular scoliosis.

Anterior column realignment following lateral interbody fusion for sagittal deformity correction.
Degenerative and iatrogenic diseases may lead to loss of lordosis or even kyphotic thoracolumbar deformity and sagittal misalignment. Traditional surgery with three-column osteotomies is associated with important neurologic risks and postoperative morbidity. In a novel technique, the lateral transpsoas interbody fusion (LTIF) is complemented with the sacrifice of the anterior longitudinal ligament and anterior portion of the annulus followed by the insertion of a hyperlordotic interbody cage. ⋯ Less invasive surgical strategies can be alternatives to treat the deformity and provide better quality of life to the patient. ACR is an advanced application of lateral transpsoas approach, up to date has shown to be reliable and effective when used for ASD, and may minimize complications and morbidity from traditional surgical procedures. Long-term follow-up and comparative studies are needed to evaluate real benefit.

Review Meta AnalysisRole of vitamin C in prevention of complex regional pain syndrome after distal radius fractures: a meta-analysis.
Complex regional pain syndrome is a well-known complication after distal radius fracture with incidence ranging from 10.5 to 37 %. Some studies recommend the use of vitamin C to prevent complex regional pain syndrome. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin C in prevention of CRPS. ⋯ Our analysis showed a significant reduction in prevalence of CRPS with the use of vitamin C. Further high-quality RCTs with standard dosages and common diagnostic criteria are needed to be able to deliver solid conclusions.

Multicenter StudyCemented Thompson's hemiarthroplasty in patients with intracapsular neck of femur fractures: survival analysis of 1,670 procedures.
Cemented Thompson's prostheses have been used to treat elderly patients with displaced intracapsular hip fractures at our two units for the last 15 years, amid growing support for the use of newer implant designs for hip hemiarthroplasty. This provided us with an opportunity to investigate survival of the Thompson's stem in our patients. A retrospective cohort study was set up to review previously collected data on patients who underwent Thompson's hemiarthroplasty over a 7-year period. ⋯ Reasons for revision included infection (2.1 %), dislocation (1.1 %) and aseptic loosening (0.5 %). Symptomatic aseptic loosening and acetabular erosion occurred late (mean time 3.2 and 5.7 years, respectively following surgery). Aseptic loosening and erosion following hemiarthroplasty are relatively late complications.

Complications of short versus long cephalomedullary nail for intertrochanteric femur fractures, minimum 1 year follow-up.
Hip fractures are becoming increasingly common resulting in significant morbidity, mortality and raising healthcare costs. Both short and long cephalomedullary devices are currently employed to treat intertrochanteric hip fractures. However, which device is optimal continues to be debated as each implant has unique characteristics and theoretical advantages. This study looked to identify rates of complications associated with both long and short cephalomedullary nails for the treatment of intertrochanteric hip fractures. ⋯ Our data suggests equivocal outcomes as measured by similar catastrophic failure rate between both short and long cephalomedullary nails for intertrochanteric femur fractures. However, there was an increased risk of secondary femur fracture with short cephalomedullary nails when compared to long nails that approached statistical significance.
