Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyA comparison between pulsed radiofrequency and electro-acupuncture for relieving pain in patients with chronic low back pain.
Many treatment options for chronic low back pain are available, including varied forms of electric stimulation. But little is known about the electricity effect between electro-acupuncture and pulsed radiofrequency. The objective of this study is to assess the difference in effectiveness of pain relief between pulsed radiofrequency and electro-acupuncture. ⋯ This study provides sufficient evidence of the superiority of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) therapy for low back pain relief compared with both electro-acupuncture (EA) therapy and the control group. But the functional improvement of the lumbar spine was proved under EA therapy only. Both therapies are related to electricity effects.

Randomized Controlled TrialAuricular acupuncture reduces intraoperative fentanyl requirement during hip arthroplasty--a randomized double-blinded study.
We studied whether auricular acupuncture reduces analgesic requirement during total hip arthroplasty. Sixty-four patients were enrolled in this patient/anesthesiologist-blinded study according to inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture with indwelling fixed needles (points lung, shenmen, forehead and hip) or sham procedure (4 non-acupuncture points on the helix). ⋯ Patients from the acupuncture group required 21% less fentanyl during surgery than those who received sham procedure. Other outcome measures were similar in both groups. Auricular acupuncture reduced fentanyl requirement compared to sham procedure during hip arthroplasty.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialRegistering the response of tissues exposed to an interferential electric current stimulation.
Electrotherapy is a treatment method in which an electric stimulus is used to achieve physiological changes in the body. When increasing the level of the electric stimulus, three sensory, three motor and a pain response can be found. In this paper the three sensory threshold levels (1st just noticeable weak tingling sensation, 2nd a very fine but definite tingling and 3rd moderate strong tingling) were studied with an interferential electric current stimulus. ⋯ By using the method of limits, the measurements were done at three sensory threshold levels at interferential frequencies deltaf of 10 Hz, 30 Hz, 50 Hz, and 100 Hz caused by two sine waves, one with a frequency between 2490 Hz and 2400 Hz, and the other constant 2500 Hz. In the method based on Bekésy's algorithm the interferential frequency deltaf was increased from 1 Hz to 100 Hz by changing the first frequency from 2499 Hz to 2400 Hz and the measurement was repeated for all three sensory thresholds. The sensory thresholds for interferential current stimuli seem to be quite unaffected by the interferential electric current frequency among the healthy test persons, and no distinct interferential electric current frequencies at which the threshold values should be measured were found in this study.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialDoes a viral infection cause complex regional pain syndrome?
In 1990 Omura, Y. reported that Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 as the major cause of chronic intractable pain and its effective treatment using mixture of EPA & DHA with Selective Drug Uptake Enhancement Method. Subsequently among the other causes of pain, he included Chlamydia Trachomatis, Borrelia Burgdorferi, Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, human Herpes Virus type 6, and Circulatory Disturbances. In order to test possible involvement of viral infection in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a disease which usually occurs in the extremities, we did a study of 17 patients with CRPS. ⋯ Also, VZV, which causes shingles which is sometimes followed by Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN), is in the same family of HSV. As PHN resembles CRPS in symptoms, it is possible that HSV contributes to CRPS. Therefore, virus infection theory is an attractive hypothesis that accounts for many enigmas of CRPS.

Comparative StudyMyocardial protective effects of electroacupuncture and hypothermia on porcine heart after ischemia/reperfusion.
The study was carried out in order to observe the protective effects of electroacupuncture (EA) and hypothermia on myocardial ischemic and reperfusion injury in pigs. Blood superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and its isoenzyme (CK-MB), coronary artery flow (CAF) and myocardial heat-shock protein (HSP) mRNA expression were detected. It was observed that the MDA content increased and SOD activities decreased more significantly in control group compared with EA and EA+ hypothermia groups. ⋯ HSP70 mRNA expression was found to be more in EA and EA+ hypothermia groups than that in control group 60 min after reperfusion. The results indicated that EA enhance the myocardial protection of hypothermia on ischemia/reperfusion injury. The mechanism may be related to the improvement of antioxidation and increased expression of HSP70 gene.
