To compare anesthesia recovery quality after racemic (R-/S-) or S-ketamine infusions during isoflurane anesthesia in horses. ⋯ Compared with R-/S-ketamine, anesthesia recovery was better with S-ketamine infusions in horses.

Effect of remifentanil on requirements for propofol administered by use of a target-controlled infusion system for maintaining anesthesia in dogs.
To evaluate the effect of remifentanil administered by use of a constant rate infusion on the predicted plasma concentration (Cp(predicted)) of propofol required to prevent awareness in 50% of anesthetized dogs (Cp50(predicted)). ⋯ In nonpremedicated dogs, propofol Cp50(predicted) of 6.0 microg/mL may be recommended for induction of anesthesia. Propofol requirements for maintaining target-controlled infusion system-based anesthesia were reduced via infusion of remifentanil at a rate of 0.3 microg/kg/min.

To evaluate the effects of increasing doses of remifentanil hydrochloride administered via constant rate infusion (CRI) on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in cats. ⋯ The 3 doses of remifentanil administered via CRI resulted in a similar degree of isoflurane MAC reduction in adult cats, indicating that a ceiling effect was achieved following administration of the lowest dose.

Determination of cardiac output in anesthetized neonatal foals by use of two pulse wave analysis methods.
To compare cardiac output (CO) measured by lithium arterial pressure waveform analysis (PULSECO) and CO measured by transpulmonary pulse contour analysis (PICCO) in anesthetized foals, with CO measured by use of lithium dilution (LIDCO) considered the criterion-referenced standard. ⋯ Values for the PULSECO method were more reproducible and agreed better with values for the LIDCO method than did values for the PICCO method and were able to more accurately monitor changes in CO in anesthetized newborn foals.

Comparison of caudal epidural anesthesia by use of lidocaine versus a lidocaine-magnesium sulfate combination in cattle.
To compare time of onset and duration of analgesia obtained by epidural administration of a lidocaine-magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) combination versus a lidocaine-distilled water combination in cattle. ⋯ The combination of lidocaine with MgSO4 produced analgesia of longer duration than lidocaine with distilled water. By use of this combination, long-duration obstetric and surgical procedures could commence relatively soon after epidural injection and could be completed without readministration of anesthetic.
