To examine the amount of heat generated in equine cortical bone by a 6.2-mm drill, using low- and high-speed and controlled feed rate drilling. ⋯ Results of using this in vitro model suggest that temperatures at the drill-bone interface may be sufficiently high to result in significant thermal necrosis when drilling equine cortical bone.

To determine pharmacokinetic variables and pharmacologic effects of the S(-) isomer of bupivacaine (S[-]-BPV) in dogs. ⋯ In dogs, the pharmacologic behavior of S(-)-BPV was similar to that of the bupivacaine racemate, but motor block attributable to S(-)-BPV lasted longer than that attributable to the racemate, with lower plasma concentrations observed at equivalent sample collection times.

To determine whether pulmonary distribution of aerosolized technetium Tc 99m pentetate is improved after inhalation of a single dose of albuterol sulfate in horses susceptible to recurrent airway obstruction (heaves). ⋯ Precedent bronchodilator administration may improve pulmonary distribution of aerosolized, surface-active anti-inflammatory preparations.

Temporal changes in core body temperature in anesthetized adult horses.
To examine temporal patterns of core body temperatures in adult horses during general anesthesia and to determine the efficacy of forced-air warming blankets in attenuating decreases in core body temperatures. ⋯ Core body temperature decreases steadily in adult horses anesthetized in a cool, dry environment. Forced-air warming devices can attenuate this decrease. Additional body heat can be lost rapidly when anesthetized horses are positioned on cold surfaces during recovery.

To evaluate the accuracy of 3 automated methods of determining Hct and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, compared with manual methods. Animals-22 clinically normal adult horses of various breeds. ⋯ Although there were some limitations in measuring at low Hb concentrations, the method of determining Hb concentration and Hct with blood gas analyzer 2 was more accurate than that with blood gas analyzer 1 (Hct and Hb concentration) or the hemoximeter (Hb only).
