Comparative Study Observational StudyPrimary Cleft Lip and Palate Repair in Assam, India: Does Preoperative Anthropometric Analysis Help Identify Patients With Increased Surgical Risk in a Clinically Prescreened Population?
To compare anthropometric z-scores with incidence of post-operative complications for patients undergoing primary cleft lip or palate repair. ⋯ Anthropometric z-scores were not correlated with increased risk of surgical complications, possibly because patients were well screened for malnutrition before surgery at this center. Primary palate repair is associated with an approximate fivefold increased risk of developing postoperative complication(s) compared with primary lip repair.

Oral Clefts and Academic Performance in Adolescence: The Impact of Anesthesia-Related Neurotoxicity, Timing of Surgery, and Type of Oral Clefts.
Early life exposure to anesthesia and surgery is suspected to associate with cognitive impairment later in life. We compared academic achievement among adolescents with cleft lip only (CL), cleft palate only (CP), and cleft lip and cleft palate (CLP) with a noncleft control group to investigate whether outcome depends on timing and number of operations during childhood and/or type of oral cleft. ⋯ Oral cleft type rather than number and timing of anesthesia and operations associate to poorer academic performance. Although a potential neurotoxic effect due to anesthetic agents is not reflected in the data, it cannot be completely excluded.

Case ReportsIsolated Unilateral Soft Palate Palsy Following Tonsillopharyngitis Caused by Epstein-Barr Virus Infection.
Soft palate palsy with or without pharyngeal or laryngeal paralysis or facial palsy has been described in the literature fewer than 40 times. Of these cases, isolated unilateral soft palate palsy (occurring without any other neurologic manifestation) has been rare. Most cases of isolated soft palate palsy were termed idiopathic in the past. ⋯ We describe a case of isolated soft palate palsy, following a pharyngotonsillitis caused by Epstein-Barr virus. This viral infection has been linked in the past with bilateral facial nerve palsy and radial nerve palsy. Our patient recovered spontaneously over a period of 1 month.

Comparative StudyA Comparison of Nonopioid and Opioid Oral Analgesia Following Pediatric Palatoplasty.
