Carcinoma of the gastric remnant has increased in recent years, but a therapeutic strategy for this disease has not been established. This retrospective study was performed to determine the most appropriate surgical procedure for carcinoma of the gastric remnant. ⋯ Almost the same surgical strategy can be adopted for the B group as for primary gastric carcinoma. On the other hand, for the M group, a radical surgical procedure, LUAE, should be recommended.

Patients suffering from liver failure with other end-stage organ failures may benefit from combined organ transplant procedures. Liver transplantation has been combined with other transplants to treat otherwise-intractable diseases, such as advanced cystic fibrosis, primary hyperoxaluria, and cirrhosis. Multiple organ transplantation may be indicated following the resection of certain upper abdominal malignancies. Combining bone marrow and liver transplantation shows promise in improving the immunological tolerance of the liver graft.

We performed a retrospective evaluation of 11 patients in the final stages of hepatic disease with chronic kidney failure, in whom simultaneous double liver-kidney transplantation was performed. ⋯ The use of conventional intraoperative hemodialysis and/or ultrafiltration is feasible, useful and achieves good results in patients undergoing double liver-kidney transplantation. Partial clamping of the inferior vena cava at the anhepatic stage appears to reduce the need for ultrafiltration. There is no increase in perioperative mortality in patients who underwent liver transplantation while conserving their renal function.

Gastric emptying and antral myoelectrical activity in chronic alcoholics with dyspepsia.
Chronic alcoholism is known to effect gastric motor activity. An association between gastric motility disorders and abnormal myoelectrical activity has been observed in various gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic alcoholism on gastric emptying and antral myoelectrical activity. ⋯ Chronic alcoholism induces a disturbance of gastric emptying, probably resulting from toxic damage of the gastrointestinal smooth muscles. Disturbances in antral myoelectrical activity were not found.

Migraine is a commonly unilateral throbbing headache, which has been associated with disorders of the vascular tone. Helicobacter pylori, the most relevant cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer, has been recently associated with a typical functional vascular disorder such as primary Raynaud phenomenon. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of H. pylori for patients affected by migraine and the effects of H. pylori eradication on migraine symptoms. ⋯ H. pylori is common in subjects with migraine. Bacterium eradication causes a significant decrease in attacks of migraine. The reduction of vasoactive substances produced during infection may be the pathogenetic mechanism underlying the phenomenon.
