How many of the COVID-19 deaths occurred in the Intensive Care Unit?
The percentage of overall COVID-19 deaths which occurred in intensive care units (ICU) is unknown. We estimated 18% in Italy from February 21, 2020, to February 21, 2021, using cumulative numbers from publicly available databases. This study aims to confirm this percentage using raw data from Italian and European registries. ⋯ The percentage of COVID-19 deaths which occurred in European ICUs was 16% and consistent across different countries, ranging from 10% to 22%. Interestingly, we observed no difference between pandemic waves and intra-pandemic periods.

Meta AnalysisNorepinephrine versus phenylephrine for post-spinal hypotension in parturients undergoing caesarean section: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Multiple studies have compared varying prophylactic and therapeutic doses of norepinephrine and phenylephrine given as either intermittent bolus or fixed-rate infusion to combat postspinal hypotension in patients undergoing cesarean section (CS). We conducted a systematic review to figure out the best alternative to treat postspinal hypotension. ⋯ Comparable efficacy for management of postspinal hypotension, though, norepinephrine was found to cause less incidence of maternal bradycardia as compared to phenylephrine.

Randomized Controlled TrialParavertebral block versus erector spinae plane block for analgesia in modified radical mastectomy: a randomized, prospective, double-blind study.
Pain control after breast surgery is crucial and supported with regional techniques. Paravertebral block (TPVB) is shown to be effective in postoperative pain management. Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is assumed to have a similar analgesic effect as an easier and safer block. Our aim was to compare TPVB and ESPB for modified radical mastectomy (MRM) in terms of analgesic efficiency and dermatomal spread. ⋯ Thoracal paravertebral block reduced morphine consumption compared to ESPB after MRM, albeit a small difference. A through coverage of TPVB may be preferred with experienced operators in MRM due to lower pain scores.
