Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy of a Novel Prewarming System in the Prevention of Perioperative Hypothermia. A prospective, randomized, multi-centre study.
Perioperative hypothermia is a common complication during general anesthesia. Although rewarming of patients before surgery has been used as a preventive measure and some guidelines recommend it, the implementation of prewarming for every surgical patient is cumbersome. Therefore, we sought to determine the efficacy of two novel prewarming methods that could facilitate prewarming in daily practice. ⋯ In our study active prewarming with a forced-air warmer and an insulating prewarming suit achieves significantly higher core temperatures during anesthesia and at the end of surgery and avoids hypothermia at the end of surgery compared to commercial or conventional insulation techniques.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyAccuracy of leptin serum level in diagnosing ventilator-associated pneumonia: a case-control study.
Undernutrition causes a reduction of body-fat mass and a decrease in the circulating concentration of leptin which impairs the production of proinflammatory cytokines and increases the incidence of infectious diseases. The main objective of this study was to determine whether leptin deficiency is a risk factor for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). ⋯ In our study, leptin level was not associated with VAP occurrence. Further studies are needed to confirm our results, and to define the exact inflammatory role of leptin, and its interest as a biomarker in ICU patients.

Multicenter StudyClinical characteristics and prognosis of pneumonia and sepsis: multicenter study.
Pneumonia is the primary source of sepsis and is significantly associated with mortality. However, only a few studies focus on its clinical characteristics and outcomes. ⋯ In patients admitted with sepsis, the pneumonia infection independently predicts 28-day in-hospital mortality. Combining the levels of serum lactate and PF ratio could be a useful approach in predicting mortality of these patients.

Multicenter StudyAcute Respiratory Failure In Neutropenic Patients Is Associated With A High Post-Icu Mortality.
Few studies have evaluated outcomes of neutropenic patients admitted to the ICU at the onset of acute respiratory failure (ARF). The main objective of this study was to describe outcomes and to identify early predictors of hospital mortality in critically ill cancer patients with ARF during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. ⋯ Our study demonstrates a meaningful ICU survival in the studied population and identified factors associated with ICU and hospital mortality. Further work is needed to address the reasons for the high post-ICU mortality rate after ARF.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyEpidemiology and outcome of sepsis syndromes in Italian ICUs:A multicentre, observational cohort study in the region of Piedmont.
Sepsis is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in the intensive care unit (ICU). We performed a study to describe the epidemiology of sepsis syndromes in patients admitted to ICUs of the Piedmont region. ⋯ Sepsis is a common occurrence in critically ill patients. Our data underscore the regional variability in the epidemiology and outcome of sepsis syndromes and may be useful to guide appropriate resource allocation.
