ReviewCharacteristics, outcomes and global trends of respiratory support in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia: a scoping review.
To date, a shared international consensus on treatment of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with invasive or non-invasive respiratory support is lacking. Patients' management and outcomes, especially in severe and critical cases, can vary depending on regional standard operating procedures and local guidance. ⋯ Global employment of respiratory supports and related outcomes are very heterogeneous. The most frequent respiratory support in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia is IMV, while NIV and CPAP are less frequently and equally applied, the latter especially in Europe, while data on NIV/CPAP-related mortality is often under-reported. Integrated and comprehensive reporting is desirable and needed to construct evidence-based recommendations.

Observational StudyCirculating leptin, soluble leptin receptor and free leptin index in critically ill patients with sepsis: a prospective observational study.
Leptin, the prototype adipokine, exerts immunomodulatory actions being implicated in inflammatory responses during sepsis. Clinical evidence regarding its role in sepsis has been contradictory, while free leptin has not been studied. The aim of this study was to jointly investigate circulating total leptin, its soluble receptor (sOB-R), and free leptin, as well as their kinetics in critically ill patients with sepsis regarding their diagnostic and prognostic value. ⋯ Higher circulating total leptin and its higher kinetics during the first week from sepsis onset independently predict 28-day survival in critically ill patients. Free leptin did not present any additional diagnostic and prognostic value in sepsis.

Observational StudyImmunosuppressive strategies in invasively ventilated ARDS COVID-19 patients.
COVID-19 is associated with elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines. We present the characteristics and outcomes of patients treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with immunosuppressive drugs, either tocilizumab or anakinra compared with controls. ⋯ In invasively ventilated COVID-19 patients, treatment with anakinra was associated with a higher probability of clinical improvement compared to tocilizumab; however, treatment with either drug did not result in clinically meaningful improvements compared with controls.

Observational StudyComparison of the dilatory effect of three strategies on peripheral veins of the upper extremity in adults.
Dilated veins are associated with increased success of peripheral intravenous cannulation, due to their improved visibility and palpability. We compared three strategies to achieve venodilation (tourniquet, electrical stimulation, or a combined strategy) on increase in venous size. ⋯ In general, the largest sized veins are situated in the upper arm, of which the cephalic vein has the largest cross-sectional area and diameter. The combination of electrical stimulation followed by tourniquet application resulted in the greatest increase in venous size and is therefore considered as the most effective to improve peripheral intravenous cannulation success.
